Im just in the final stages of putting together a marine tank and have everything and I have a question about buying the rock !

If I do buy new and cycle it. . . what is the siutation with buying more in the future will I have to go through another cycle or is this not advisable if there is Livestock in there ?

Just wondering if I can save money by buying half now and half in a month or two .. . . ?

Nothing wrong with adding more live rock down the road.

So will I have to watch for Amonia spikes all over again when I add more Live rock in the future ? Will this affect anything living in the tank at that time ?

Live rock, if anything is the cure for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and all that. So, no.

Unless you order it on the web, and there is die off during shipping. At that point, the liverock itself becomes a big ammonia bomb and needs to be cured away from the main tank. If you add more later, buy it locally so there is minimal die off.

Great point. Also if you buy locally you can buy a few at a time and that way not over burden your system. It's like adding fish, you don't want to add to many fish at one time, same with the rock.
PS sorry for the weird avatar--------------->

Well if you are buying cured rock and you bring it home in buckets...why would there be any 'die off'?

I've brought home cured LR on 3 separate occasions now and have never had an ammonia spike...

So have I, but the one time I made the mistake of ordering it off the web, I recieved a box full of decaying rot that took me weeks to re-cure in a tub. Buying locally and putting it in a bucket is great and the only way to avoid die off. It costs more, but it is so worth it.

Has anyone else found that live/cured rock is getting harder and harder to find? My LFS had someone come in and sold all he had from his tank tare down and I was in need of some so I bought it all. There is growth on the rock and I've got it all in a tub with heat and good water flow, making sure it stays alive. I know I've got too much rock for my 90 gal DT so what I don't need or use, I'll be putting it on Craigslist.

In doing my aquascaping, some of it will get dried out. Some of the rock will need to be broken and some will find its way into my sump.
