Do they ever hang out above the waterline?

Mine never do. They occasionally will climb in floating plants or climb the sides of the tank, but for the most part mine are always on or in the substrate or under plants.

Same here, I have had one be at the surface several times but its not an everyday occurence and I have never seen them outside the waterline.
Never had assassins... I want assassins... but never had them. I did read though that baby assassins climb to a high point and then let themselves float away on the current... much like a baby spider.
This disperses the population in the wild.
Obviously that isn't ABOVE the water line- but if your snail is young could it be getting ready to jump and float?

He is not totally out just like "peeking" out. His little gray snorkle thing or w/e isn't out just part of his foot. Should I be conscerned? The others are crusing along the bottom and along the glass...

Sometimes when they are adjusting to a new tank I will have them sit just below or at the waterline for a while. Just keep an eye on him. You could also gently place him back on the bottom and see what happens.

OK I have been keeping an eye on him. If he is still that way when I get home I will place him back on the bottom and see how that goes. Probably just adjusting or tired of the bladder snails riding him around.

OK he went back down and is chillin' on the bottom

Sounds like he is doing well then, keep me informed if there are any changes. This was the youngest batch I have sent out and I'm tracking survival rate vs. age.

I will let you know, I think he just needed some time to adjust. Just threw in a crap load of snails so I think they will be busy for a while. :D
I had one female assassin almost pop out of my tank rim. I freaked out and sealed the gaps with scotch tape. Since then, it never made another attempt. It was the only one attempting to get out. Found her again inside a sponge filter tube winding herself on the bubbles.:perv:
