Convict Saved from Filthy Tank

I just got three convicts from the most disgusting tank that I've ever seen with living fish in it. Due to my tank situation, I probably shouldn't have taken any, but at least mine are clean!

The man's wife is the one who owns the fish, but she has been incarcerated since February. The convict tank has not been maintained sine then. I believe it's a 55gal long tank, by eyeballing it. The water level was a little higher than half way, and there were two long dead convicts floating that I saw, more that he took out. The sides were coated with brown, fluffy filth, as was the gravel on the bottom.

Two of the three I saved show very little markings and are pale and almost clear. Are they sick, and can they get my other fish sick? The other is bigger and looks more like a convict, but is still a little pale and translucent.

I will post pictures tomorrow night, as I do not have access to a digital camera until then, but if you can diagnose anything with information alone, please do. I'm going to go and clean the tank later this week, and I brought over water conditioner after I got the fish and added water. It was awful...

commendable rescue...

as far as getting your other fish sick-- chances are they are just heavily stressed-- but I would DEFINATELY quarantine them for a while to make sure they dont have diseases after being in a tank like that

Good luck with them

Are you keeping them, or just holding them in your tank, until you get their tank back up?

I want to keep one of them, but I might get attached and keep them all. That means upgrading to a bigger tank, though, so I don't know if I can...

Congrats, I am glad there are decent people to step up to the plate and take on reaponsibilities thrust upon them. Your convicts probably aren't ill if you havent noticed any odd behaviour or appearance. I have seen some fish thrive after being recues from mud colored water. Turbidity shouldn't have any negative effects if the size and density of particles in the water are not exteme. Quarantine tank is a good idea anyway though.

Thank you for your efforts.

As well as the number of fry you could be seeing really soon if there are both sexes within your trio.

Okay, the biggest convict died for reasons unapparent, and the smallest I found on the floor, dried up and dead one morning, so I'm down to one. :thumbsdown:Ammonia and nitrites are fine, and the remaining is looking very good. It's getting a lot of color and starting to stripe-up! It's really cute, and I can't wait to put it in my 110gal!

Wow, great save!! I have a male con rescued from similarly horrible conditions; he was white and transparent, and now has shadow of stripes and white. He seems happy by himself (I didn't have any tanks safe for his little self) so he's putting on weight, very responsive, and hopefully will continue (he's been with me about 2.5 months now). Probably stunted in growth : (
