My son is very into cichlids and would like to have some when we move to TX. The unfortunate thing is he only has a 10 gal and can't put the common kind you find in the LFS. I've been reading on here about shelly's. Does anyone know where he can get some?

Not sure about lfs's in your area, but you can find them here pretty readily, I'm sure there are good lfs's around texas that might carry them, you can also try a fish club or get them online either yourself or ask your local lfs to order them for you and avoid the shipping costs.

www.davesfish.com is located in San Antonio. He has great cichlids (including shellies) and also ships.

I highly recommend Dave.

As far as stocking, I am no expert, but I think it would be cool to have 2 calvus in a 10 gallon, maybe plenty of rock work (THR?).

They are slow growers and not generaly found in lfs.

My suggestion is to contact Dave and tell him what you have and what your son likes.

Although they are very slow growers, calvus can reach around 5-6" so not a good stocking long-term. Most calvus seen in the stores are already around 3-4" IME. You would want closer to 40-55 gallons for a full grown adult.

ToddnBecka is right, a 20 gallon would give your fish more room but won't take up much more of your living space. You would also be able to keep more shellies, which a lot of the species tend to colonize.

daves is a good store to go to and if you happen to move anywhere close to san antonio you may just want to drive in to the store. i go there in te occasion and its where i get most of my cichlids. he has a pretty good selection of shell dwellers. but a word of warning when you go into the store. it is like a sauna in there. all the moisture from the tanks and that make it incredibly hot and sweaty in there.

I agree with jpappy, maybe some a.comps would suit that tank better.

What tank for the A. comps, ibr3ak? Aren't them about the same size as the Calvus?
