A friend of mine gave me some liverock he had sitting in buckets. the rick is dry hasnt had water on it at all and just sat in his basement for the alst 2 years. i was wondering if i put it through the curing process if it would bring it back and make it useable again? this is my first saltwater tank and i havnt started it yet so let me know. thanks
Jim
Yes, you can cure it to make it useable once again. Things will go much quicker if you put a few pieces of living live rock in with it.
Dry rock is dead rock. Anything that was once living and useful is long gone. That's not a bad thing, cuz all you need to do is bleach it, then rinse it till you can't smell any more bleach, then you can safely use it as baserock. Then you'll add some "fresh" liverock to the tank and the baserock will quickly become re-populated and functional.. I'm actually about to do this very same process with some rock of my own..

Myself, for more then 5.5 years after I moved into my new home, I had no idea that I wouldn't been starting any reef tank in all that time, but still the LR was in a proper salinity water holding. And been that for the most part of that time frame, the pumps weren't running. Still, my LR will not take long to become reactivated, and being that its to be in a reef system, I have to believe that this would as well help the LR a great deal.
