My little snapper I got this month. 20gal, 77 degrees with 24 feeder minnows and 9 babies. Filtered by a hob, and yes the hob filter is IN the water
Hornwort seems to be doing great in this tank, I guess since there isnt 12" goldfish in this tank it can thrive.. Also has 1.75wpg

Ill have my 180 tank on stand buy when I build my fish a bigger tank, so he will eventually go from a 20gal to 180gal, I am HOPING this summer late fall. I think the 180 gal will hold him for a good number of years, just dont know about the pond liner and his claws, I might have to line the edges with rocks or something. Im thinking maybe a final all in all life long tank for him would be like a 8x3x2 or a 8x4x2 tank. Who knows until then, I got many years ahead before he gets to big for the 180.

Nice baby snapper. I missing having those guys. Good choice of feeder fish. Stay away from Rosy Reds and Goldfish. Do you have it feeding on a good brand of turtle pellet? Mine use to love snails, earthworms, crickets, thawed shrimp, aquatic insect larva and sometimes water lettuce.

When well cared for they grow faster than you think :)
By stock tank I meant a water tank for livestock. Look here http://www.turtletimes.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=36398&hl=stock+tank

I hate stock tanks, I need a viewing window. When I built my 180 gal I just had top view and hated it, so I eventually bolted up a acrylic window to it. MUCH better to see the fish from the side. Id like to see the turt from the side to!

Well its good I didnt get roseys then, I only got the guppies because he is so small and they were the smallest feeders they had. They also have feeder shrimp, I wonder if he would like those.
He actually just started eating a few days ago, he was still using up his yolk sack when i got him. Right now I have some chiclid gold pellets for him to munch on (floating). Right now I just want him to eat, I dont think he even looks at the guppies yet, they swim by his face and peck at his shell at he just sits there. Hes only snapped once at them to my knowledge.
This weekend I wouldnt mind getting some turtle pellets as long as they are not to big for him. I have medium pellets and they are just a tad to big for him, takes him a few bites to get it down.

They can be sold for educational or "display" purposes only. SO as long as you say it is for "display" you can usually get away with it :D
It is an outdated law anyway.

Reptomin is a good choice of pellet. I've been feeding it to my turtles for years. They make it in a baby pellet now too. I also feed my turtles cichild and koi pellets now and then to add some variety. They also take algae waffers.
Live shrimp are a great food source to feed as well but stay away from wild caught crayfish. They've been known to transfer diseases/parasites to turtles.

we have a lfs the has a huge one in a 125g tank and its way to big for that is about 3 and ft in diameter and can't lay flat or turn this is wrong for them to be in tanks even the biggest tank is too small for them have any of you seen them in the wild how really big they can get?
we have on over the high wall that is the size of a semi tire.... they get huge and they should really be left in the wild,..
yes very cute but very wild,..

A semi tire? I think maybe you're exaggerating a bit... I'm fairly certain common snappers don't get that large. Alligators might?
I must agree, though, that keeping them in captivity long-term is not really all it's cracked up to be. In the proper set-up, I don't think it's harmful to the turtle, but it can be harmful for the owner. You wouldn't believe the 'strike zone' on these turtles, especially as they grow. Have fun transferring it from tank to tank and trying to do maintenance on your tank...

no not really it was I'm sure a fluke of nature but he was there over a high wall in a strip mine pond,..
people through their tired there to get rid if them and there were truck tire in there, and i saw a tire moving and it was a snapper,.. he had his very own giant lake with all the fish he wanted to eat and he couldn't get out and be hurt as where it was in the woods,.. so he just grew and grew,.. haven't been back there ia a few years,.. but I'm sure he was very old,..
and by the way i drive semis so i know what a semi tires is,.. just so you don't ask,..
i don't exaggerate unless i say its a joke,.. no joke here,..
most don't get that big because they are a risk if humans/or disease or other competition etc,.. but this guy was in Paradise,..

Iv only seen ONE humungous snapping turtle, but that was at like some wildlife thing. Think was HUGE, I think they said it was like 100 years old (back in hs so hard to remember) but I know it was between 100-110yo, or as they said. Like the guy said, it was as big as a semi tire. I wish I remember where I saw it at, I would go see if it was still there and take pics.

Wow, he is super cute. I agree that they grow a lot faster then you think. I never had a problem feeding mine guppies (some might just become friends though), earth worms (when he is bigger), and turtle pellets. Since you have had him from a baby, then you will have to plan having him for the long run, I don't think he would know how to survive without you feeding him.
He will probably need a pond eventually, but these guys are so great at escaping. I had a big one once that escaped and had been ran over by a car in front of our house, so plan carefully.

Ya back in hs I had one for a few years. Put him outside in a pond for the summer, about a week later he was gone. Few days later found him run over in front of the house. Iv learned my lesson on putting them outside in a pond unless I made a 2' concrete underground wall around him.

Please do not take turtles from the wild, that is how species end up on the endangered list.
There are plenty of captive bred sources for snappers.

05-03-2009, 6:42 PM
Yes, that is bad. For one, they become dependent on you for food. They need to know how to hunt, especially the little ones. For two, many chelonians are very orientated to their exact living area, and removing them can be confusing, and that confusion can prove deadly. Three, if they are exposed to any pathogens while in captivity, it can infect the entire population.

He took them since the day I put them in the tank. Now when he sees me drop it in the water he practically jumps at it. I wonder how long it will take before he realizes the guppies are food. I might end up with the only vegetarian snapper haha.

Your snapper might never view the guppies as food source but I doubt that will ever happen when dealing with such a predatory species. But hey, who knows. The earlier you you keep the two together the more they get use to each other. I keep Musk and Mud Turtles with fish and they never have attempted to eat them. Heck they crawl all over the pleco that lives with them and the convict cichlid pushes them around.

Update, he aint small no more!
The hornwort I had in his tank before killed itself after I moved in the summer. I guess going from well water to public was to much for it. so I got a few bunches today and threw 1 bunch in his tank. Hopefully it takes off.
As for the tanks glass, I like it to look all natural in his tank so I dont clean the glass except the front one for viewing.

ooh ya. The first batch of fish took a few months or so for him to get them all. They kept breeding so I kept getting more and more til he got em all. Now they dont even stand a chance. I bought 12 the other week and all were gone withing 15min. He is now a true snapper and eats ANYTHING, he even got my hand a lil bit, scared the crap out of me. Only drew a lil blood:thm:

Judging through the glass and his snapping trying to get me, id say his shell is 4-4.5" across. He is still in his 20gallon from the start. I got a 55gal at my parents but I need to replace the bottom frame and re seal it before he goes in.

I used to keep baby snappers when i was younger, took forever to figure out that they only eat moving things (found out when it tried to eat my cat lol). Nice looking snapper. The safest to pick him up and move him would be to drain the tank down so he can't swim around and to pick him up by his tail. They have longer necks than people think when they stretch them out. It might seem cruel to some, but just don't yank them up. Turtles are very tough animals. I've never had any as pets but have caught more than I can count and wouldn't think of picking them up any other way.

on babies its actually better to pick up by the back of the shell, most can't reach around. For juvies, your best bet is a forklift.
