I bought 4 discus at around christmas time. 3 of them did great but one never looked right. The weak one died a couple of weeks ago. Couldnt find any reason why, all water parameters fine. Just guessed id bought bad stock as it was pretty stunted but I didnt realise at the time.
But the question is now do I get another? The 3 I have left seem to get on ok. The largest one never picks on the others and the other two just squabble between themselves but nothing terrible. But Im worrying that as they get older this might change.

Hi Muppet. Sorry you lost the one little guy. Three is not really a good number of discus to keep. What often times happens is that there is not enough of them to spread the aggression around, one gets picked on until it gives up and dies. We see it happen over and over again. I would suggest adding a fourth back into the group. The way it is now, especially if two of the three pair up, the oddball out third fish is going to suffer a ton of stress.

If possible, I suggest adding at least two more to the group. 5 is considered to be the minimum by most discus keepers. When you get the new one(s) make sure that they are of equal size to the ones in the tank already. For example, don't get a 3" fish if you have 4" fish in the tank. Make sure the fish is just as big if not slightly larger.

Sorry to hear that : (. Our little runt is stressed big time the others where taking chunks of fins out, he is my wifes favorite. Had to take him out of our 55 gallon into another he seems to be better now: I need to buy two or three more to even things out with other three which range between 3.5 to over 4. What size is your tank?
