While it's a serious disease I don't think its going to be as widespread as many people believe. I'm personally not all that worried.

I'd rather sit at home with a fever than go to work, so I hope I do get the pig flu. :lipssealedsmilie:

Same panic every year... Next year it'll be puppy flu or some other sufficiently terror inducing scenario. At this rate, by the time I have kids, the meaning of the word pandemic probably won't be much different from the sniffles.

Umm, you wouldn't be sitting at home. ;)

im going to start the next one. im going to expose my endlers to extreme levels of bacteria and inject them with flu stuff. than i am going to let them form a virus. then in mass numbers release them into the water ways and spread the disease to people. it shall be called. THE GUPPY FLU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Considering my campus had 4 cdc confirmed cases announced today and 12 other probable cases that are waiting cdc confirmation I'm a little worried. But, I haven't changed my habits at all. I will be much more worried if people/classmates start to die.

I teach at a college, and the news has my students in an absolute flurry. Mutated strain... okay, could be worse than the standard flu in severity, could be the same-- just different. I think it will end up like the SARS "pandemic"-Lysol, Ibuprofen, chicken soup, kleenex and three to four sick days and most sufferers will be good to go. MRSA was much more frightening.

Better than exposing any portion of yourself and a lot safer for all of us!

Let's get real for once. The media sensationalizes everything they can to get their ratings up. Pandemic actually mean an epidemic of an infectious disease that is wide spread. Considering how many cases are being reported I would hardly classify this as being of epidemic proportions. The fact that many are actually recovering from it rather than dying, gives me pause as to how it should be properly classified.

This is not to say that it isn't serious since it certainly is, but why run around thinking it's going to be lethal to all that contract it? Certainly appropriate perspective is in order and the hand-wringing needs to stop. The only way this qualifies as a pandemic is because it's new, infectious, and widespread. Remove any one qualifier and it is no longer considered a pandemic.

Nope, not at all.

And as for having children, I've got three, one an infant. I put far more faith in my ability to properly nourish my children and build healthy immune systems in them than any pharmaceutical product could ever "protect" them.

if you were to get it, you would probably have a hell of a time shaking it off but like any flu your body will fight it off unless youre immunocomprimised.

The media is ridiculous, getting everybody scared to death from a strain of flu that has affected what, just over a hundred people in this country? Are you kidding me? How many thousands of people die each year from regular flu?
A vaccine will be created and next year there will be a fishy flu that the entire country will have to panic about, thanks to the media.

id like to add, i like this board because so many of us actually have science backgrounds and are somewhat intelligent and know the basic principles behind infectious diseases.

Also, I had the DEADLY MRSA last year that I contracted from grappling. You know, the killer bacterial staph that has been around for a hundred years or so. My leg swelled up pretty nicely and it was kind of painful. Went to the doctor, she gave me an antibiotic, and it went away in a week.

Granted, I probably would have died if I had ignored it but how dumb can you be to ignore and infection that creeps up your limb and swells?

how did your course of treatment go?
Mine was a bit different since I had it in my eyes:eek3: Yes I said in my eyes, mainly the left eye. I still to this day see halos and my vision is EXTREMLY impaired in that eye. I was seen by a specialist at the University of Virginia who put me on steriodal eye drops along with this gunky steriod gel stuff that I had to rub in my eyes 3 times per day and some type of antibiotic that I don't remember the name of. It took almost 3 months before I could go back to work and like a month before I stopped waking up every morning with my eyes totally sealed shut and having to hold hot compresses on them to get them to even open. UUUGGHHH just thinking about it makes me sick to my stomach. The oddest thing about it was that my eyes at times would actually bleed, like tears of blood. It scared the living you know what out of me the first time, I guess I never really thought your eyes could bleed like that.

Roughly 30, 000.

My_Goldie

I'm not afraid of it. A bit wary and cautious yes, but only because I am one of the people considered to be in the danger zone for it and just about every other flu.
Flu season comes and goes every year. I just have to be a bit more careful with what I do at those times.

The media is just blowing it up.

The media gets everyone all jacked up over a topic and then bring in a panel of supposed "experts" that tell us what we already know and what common sense dictates. You need to listen to only one panel of "experts" to realize you already know more than they do. It's like standing in front of a burning house and the fireman looks at you and says "I am a fire expert because I have 30+ years of fire fighting and that house is on fire!" Duhhh, really? I need you to tell me that?

Common sense will do you more good than all the news stories ever could. As far as infants goes, they are far more protected than you are because they are kept clean, well rested, well fed, and rarely exposed to situations that would put them at risk.

No, it wont stop me from eating fish, pork, beef, bird, veggies, or fruit.

Get a grip on reality!

Eating pork is fine, swine flu does not spread through meat.

"Influenza spreads between humans through coughing or sneezing and people touching something with the virus on it and then touching their own nose or mouth. Swine flu cannot be spread by pork products, since the virus is not transmitted through food."

I am not going to panic just yet, people die from flu every year, swine or not.

Increased viewership for the news outlets. Increased control for the government. Scared masses will accept alot. Wait for the new legislation that "protects us" (read: strips away individual rights) to come out. No telling what will be targetted.

Mods- feel free to delete if inappropriate. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't at least post it though. :)

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet... Apparently out of the 150 or so "confirmed" deaths due to swine flu, only 22 ended up being real. So there you have it,over a thousand cases worldwide, and only 22 actual deaths.
