ive just got out of hospital and returned home to the pleasent suprise that my neolamprologus leleupi (lemon cichlid) have spawned in a barnicle cluster. the eggs have hatched and theres about 30-40 little pairs of eyes that i can see. the female keeps a close eye on them and the male is keeping everyone else away. the fish are kept in a heavly stocked 4' tanganikian tank with others such as:
altolamprologus calvus
leolamprologus niger
and lots more. my question is do i need to move the babies into
a) a seperate tank or b) a breeding trap put in the top of the tank. do i feed them on baby brine shrimp and if i put them in a new tank do i put the parents in too?? sorry for the long thread, its the first breeding in a relativly new tank so im a bit excited! all help greatly accepted! cheers. ben

Mmmm I put my kribensis babies in a 'floating' trap and they all died. I tried when they were newly free-swimming and also when they were a couple weeks old. No success. I think they went into shock. Also the parents kept trying to pull them through the netting and I noticed a couple were cut in half in the process. :sad

Maybe let the parents care for them up until you notice other fish picking them off, and then move them to thier own little rearing tank, like a 10 gallon. If you have lots of rock structures and little places for them to hide, then it might be best to leave them be and they will be safe in the rocks. But I would suggest letting the parents do the best they can with the fry. Good luck!

My leluepis spawned in a community tank too but they had a hard time keeping the others from eating the fry. I moved the pair to a 10 gallon and they breed like rabbits now. I keep the fry with the parents until the male starts to chase them then move the babies to a growout tank.
