Whenever I fill up my 32g rubbermaid container the night before and mix the salt for 24hrs there's always this mucusy crud that comes up from the bottom. Anybody know what this is? it's really starting to concern me, so far it hasn't caused any problems. I've got a strong enough powerhead to mix the salt, that's why I don't understand what this stuff is. At first I thought it was unmixed salt but now I'm beginning to wonder what it actually is.
I don't expect marine mix to be fully dissolved in 24 hours. Is your left-over material gone in 48-72 hours?

ok, I've always thought it was 24hrs. I guess I'll change the schedule then. Thanks.
It works for me, hope it does for you as well. As soon as I use part of the pre-mixed water, I bring it back up so that I always have water ready in case of emergency. That is one advantage of too many tanks - there are always spares available.

How many tanks that use the SW do you have?

how often do you go through a 200g bucket of salt?
I don't buy anything that big, my usage is not that great. It gets hard from water uptake is not used fairly shortly.

I usually buy by the bucket. there is always a butter knife, or screwdriver & hammer nearby. LOL
LOL @ PP - I love the image of PP hammering away at bucket of salt-rocks! And she uses a lot of SW!
Now that we need a picture or video for full appreciation.

I never have to worry about it hardening, I just hate those bloody tops to the buckets. I've almost torn my fingernail off like 3 times since I've started buying the 200g buckets.

My home is so humid, if I leave the top open even for an hour, it turns into one big rock. We have an small industrial de-humidifyer in my fishroom. A screwdriver works good for getting the lid off too.
I'll second the screwdriver business - when I did more salt, that was the tool of choice.

Ok, I tried mixing it for a full 4 days before using the water and it still came up with "chunkies" in it. I'm think it may actually be a reaction between the aloe vera in the big al's water conditioner my g/f bought and the marine salt. Anyone know if that would happen? The chunkies kind of looks like hand lotion when it comes in contact with water. So far they don't affect anything other than the cosmetic look of the water.
No experience with such additives, sorry.

IMO, water conditioners are a huge waste of $$$. I just use Dechlor for instant dechlorination. If you are leaving your water to dissolve salt for over 24 hours, you don't even need that.
