I have a 40 gallon tank with 6 young Striped Kribs (Pelvicachromis taeniatus Moliwe). Sand Bottom, 2 sponge filters, no current to speak of, plenty of caves, some driftwood, will be planting the suffering **** out of it over the course of the next several weeks. I am planning on adding 3 or 4 killiefish (Aphyosemion striatum or Fundulopnchax gardneri) at some point.

It wants some algae eaters, though.

Would Ottos work? 4 or 5? Would they be able to get out of the way of the kribs when they start breeding?

If not Ottos, Howsabout Clown Plecos (Panaque maccus), a pair probably?

Failing that, my other serious option is an Albino bristlenosed pleco.

(Course, there's the longshot option of a couple west African algae eating gobies, but that might be a little too.... baroque.)

Whatsay?

Otos are pretty reclusive and should be fine with the kribs, however, they are pretty picky about algae IME.
I have noticed the algae connoisseur tendencies of ottos. In this one case I am not worried, as the short green fur that tends to obnubilate the walls of this tank is the very stuff I would serve the queen of all ottos should she decide to dine at this establishment. In short, the algae is the right stuff for ottos.

I'd go for the BN pleco unless the water is hard/alkaline enough to support nerite snails. Clown pleco's are wood eaters, won't even look at algae.

In my experience, that is half right. I have had a clown pleco for years, and he has kept every tank he has been in absolutely spotless. He does like his wood, though.

This will be a soft water tank, by the way.

Really? My otos skip anything fuzzy.

More like felt than fur. This would definitely class as a film.
