to put a yellow lab in my current 55 community setup? my friend has one that she needs to get rid of, but i was hoping on using my 30 to breed convicts.

so is there any way that could work? i'm still not too familiar with cichlids.
 
With the fish in your community tank i would say no, too slow and too many fins to pick at. I'm one of those people that have broken the cichlid/community law and have had some luck but i realize i'm playing with fire.
 
what kind of personalities do they have? do they nip fins or are they just generally somewhat aggressive? i was told the fish is still rather small if it would make a difference growing up in a community tank.
 
alright. thank you. i won't do that, but, ha, now i'm going to try grasping at straws- just because i love fish so much;

would it be possible to keep a single yellow lab in a 10 gallon? i have an extra 10 in my garage and would be willing to set it up for him if possible. they get to be 4.5 inches don't they? doesn't sound too bad to me, but i'm not sure if they need to be in groups or have any other needs requiring bigger space either.. ?
 
what about the 10 gallon?
 
Malawi Mbuna are social fish. Look at the native footage available on Youtube. You'll see that Mbuna are used to being in extremely high density per square foot. 3-4 fish I'd estimate. They may survive on theor own in a 10 gallon, but what is the point? Do you want to merely keep a fish alive or do you want to watch it thrive and exibit it's natural behaviors? Try 1 male to 3-4 female labs in a 30 gallon.
