i asked this question in a related thread of mine over in freshwater, but never got an answer... are API Leaf Zone, Flourish, and Flourish Excel ok for my turtle's tank? will they pose any issues for him via the plants he eats?

I would avoid all forms of chemicals/ferts in your turtle tank.

+1, do not use them. The turtle's waste should be all the ferts you need.

^ Yep! The water lettuce and anacharis grow great in my turtle tank.

alrighty then =) i was wondering because the duckweed hasn't been looking too happy (aside from the damages inflicted by his hungry little beak). glad i stopped to check before i assumed anything!

ok, so, the reason i had asked about this was because my duckweed is not looking happy at all, and i think now that it's because of the high ammonia in the water as produced by scooter. i do weekly water changes and vacuum the gravel, but the ammonia is still very high by the end of the week (nitrites, however, are zilch, and nitrates very low.) can i use something like ammo-lock or ammo chips to help curb the ammonia levels, or would that also be bad for him?

I would do more frequent water changes. Turtles produce a lot of waste. If your filter is not rated for 2-3x the water volume of your tank, you'll need to up the amount of WC's you do per week. When my musk turtles were little and living in a 40 gallon rubbermaid tub I would do 2-4 WC's per week just to keep the water stable. I learned my lesson and bought a big canister filter.

I agree with Viscous. You need a filter that is rated for at least twice the volume of your tank. Turtles are messy and messy eaters and more frequent water changes help.

A plant that does really well in turtle tanks, but does get nibbled, is anacharis. It seems to be a bit more hardy to the waste levels.

Do you have just duckweed, or do you have any frogbit?

Kristina

this tank is duckweed (for him to eat) and kyoto grass (to get it out of my other tank, where it really wasn't doing well.) i had frogbit in there for him to eat, but he just tore through it in about a week. he actually doesn't leave any food behind at all... every bit of pellet and every scrap of cricket go down the gullet. i've watched him eat/hunt a lot, and i check the gravel constantly. all i ever see is snails and poo. my filter is a whisper 40i, and there's only 15 gallons of water in the tank, so it is filtering twice as much.

i put out a WTB ad for anacharis, but no one ever answered me.

Make sure anacharis is legal to own in your state first. I just got rid of a bunch of ancharis, I wish I would have known you were looking, lol.
