My crawdad used to come out and grab the shrimp pellets that I put in his tank. Now he just ignores them and I am not sure when he eats. Should I vary his food source and what should I give him?
You should provide crayfish with a varied diet, to ensure that they get all the nutrients they would in nature. This means vegetable and meat matter in a variety of forms (pellets, actual scraps and veggies, feeders, plants, etc), as well as sources for things like calcium (egg shells, cuttlebone, etc).
It's up to you. Personally, I move the feeding spots around or hide food (the strong smelling things at least) and let them search for it.
When you think your cray is ill or acting oddly, you may want to place the food relatively close to them and monitor. But otherwise, it's purely up to you, because whether it's near them or far away from them, they'll find it when they're hungry ^_^
Are you talking about the crayfish in your avatar? If so, he should be on a high quality formula for a few more months! :lipssealedsmilie:
I have been feeding my blue cray frozen blood worms, spirulina pellets, shrimp pellets, algae wafers and all the fresh snails he can eat! Oh yes, also all the live plants he can eat! :swear:
i think all animals/pets should be provided with a varied diet. And the above mentioned food ideas above sound good. Imagine if you had PB&J sammiches 3 meals a day every day of the week for your entire life!
