I was just wondering......

My tank (22g) doesnt arrive for about a week, but i have my filter and heater and a couple of ornaments already. What i would like to know is can i like connect my filter to a bucket of water, and put my ornaments and heater and stuff in there, then do a fishless cycle on it all to prepare it, so that when my tank arrives i can just put it all in there and get a headstart on cycling that?

Probably be easier to ask for some established gravel from LFS or ask for some biomaterial from a friend to stick into your filter. Not sure if the bucket thing would work (I did it briefly when I was changing substrate and it was a mess).

I was thinking of asking the people who are assembling my tank for some juice from one of their filters, but the guy who i spoke to seemed a real ar$£, and in this woolyback (=braindead redneck) village im stuck in, i wouldn't be surprsied if the locals tanks had the owners 'special sauce' in them.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. It's the same idea just in a bucket, not a tank

in a week? not a good probability you will cycle a tank in this short time without a source of bacteria.

For a headstart, yes you can. It will not completely cycle in a week, but you will be a week closer to being cycled. Just make sure when you transfer the filter over to the tank when you get it that you do not allow the filter media to dry out.

thanks folks, i think im gonna try get some bacterialicious media from someone once i get my tank.

Thank for the input everyone!

I keep a bucket with a power head and foam filter with bio meadia (flourite, ceramic rings, filter inserts ect. in it going all the time. Some times I get a bit behind on water changes and doseing so its a bit more cycled some times than others but it always has a bacteria start in it. have started 2 tanks with it so far. First one insta cycled and the secound looks like it will be about a week total So yes it works.
