Well if you think about it, it's not that strange. People used to collect wild bird eggs for food, certainly most of those were fertilized and at some stage of development... Still. Not being the biggest fan of even regular run of the mill unfertilized eggs, I doubt I would enjoy! How did you like it?

I haven't eaten this stuff since I was 5 years old. I forgot how it tasted like D: Prolly like pan fried eggs

Tasted mushy/chewy/feathery didn't savor it just wanted to swallow it so it can be gone :S.

im viet/french, vietnamese people eat balut too but we call it hot vit lon (has accent marks). i like to eat it but only the ones with small duckies in it and lots of yoke.. the yoke is the best part! it's very good. umm we sprinkle salt and pepper.. sip the juices.. then dig in eating it with some assorted mints.. seeing those pictures makes my mouth all watery.. :d~

Both. I'm a human and a dancer. You're neither.

You guys are such pessimists.;) They're not bad. Just eat as soon as you buy the heated duck eggs or you'll never get a chance to taste the actual goodness.

hmmm....doesn't look all that appetizing but I would give it a try at least once. I don't think I would like the feathers or the bones. But, I've eaten some unusual things...

biggdadyapisto
05-07-2009, 9:06 AM
i don't know if you eat it when the bones have developed. i would definitely try it iv tried some weird stuff and some that were worse than that the next weird thing i want to try is the live octopus on the Japanese street markets and of course fugu.

I'm always up for trying new things, and don't get grossed out easily, but, if I onened an egg and saw a lil ducky fetus in it, there is no way I could eat it. I would feel too bad. However, if it were unfertilized I'd be game!

Heh, I wonder how my sis would react if her Vietnamese in-laws served that.

Haven't tried balut. Only into duck feet, not duck fetus. Have had fugu (poison puffer) in Tokyo, in 91. They filetted the whole fish and laid the paper thin meat slices in a nice pattern on the chopping block. I looked over to the fish and the thing was still breathing. They ended up cooking some of the bones in a soup. You have to go to school as a chef for at least 8 yrs before you can even touch one of those fugu to serve it. One wrong cut and your clientelle could die. I had some fried catepillar in Burkina Faso. My wife showed me some pics of fried mountain spider when she was in Cambodia recently. That'll be the next thing I try.

DarrylR
05-07-2009, 4:50 PM
I would say anything fried I would likely eat.

The balut was mushy and the look itself was belch.

what?! every east asian culture eats duck eggs, they eat duck too!

baluts also on the discovery channel, its part of the taboo show. in the Philippines, the locals say it has a pheromone to help you get laid.

it wouldn't be so disgusting to you guys, if you didnt' see the duck there. so just slide the animal to the side somewhere......and eat the yolk.

wow! I've eaten my fair share of strange and truly revolting but I'm not to sure if I could eat the duck fetus. I mean I looove duck but little wet fetuses with all the feathers and skin, nope. I'll stick to my bugs and weird things from the sea!

I have tried it, it's not that bad once you get over it mentally. I added pepper, salt and also had a beer with it. Saw it on fear factor and had to try it for myself.

i would just wonder where one buys balut.

hmm...wonder if the Asian market has it. they have "1000 year old" eggs, so why not?
