Where the ducks walk on the fish, PA
My VT Betta seems to be going blind. His eyes are opaque. He lives in a 10 gal tank that also has Cherry Shrimp in it. It gets 20% water changes twice a week. Temp is 78, Am 0, Ni 0, Na 5-10. Cherry shrimp are all prospering so I know the water quality is fine. No other problems except I have to drop his food in right next to him. He gobbles 7 pellets up within a minute twice a day (I know he is a pig). I have had him 8 months or there about. He was being put into his bowl out of the shipping bag at the LFS when I saved him from that fate, so he isn't that old.

Can fish just go blind?

I think they can go blind if there is an internal problem within the eyes. It could be an underlining issue....infection, parasite or diseases of the eyes perhaps. May he has a detached Retina. Maybe the water he was in when shipped was not all that clean also. God only knows where he was shipped from and how clean his surroundings were kept.

I don't think it is a parasite or anything because as long as I have had him, I think it would have progressed past his eyes. Although I do not know if there is a parasite that just attacks the eyes. Disease of the eye or genetic eye problem sounds more likely as even if the water he came in was bad, the water quality since he has been here has been maintained. Cherry shrimp are very sensitive to water issues and would have given me a heads up on anything like that.

Fish can get cataracts as they get old, however, I would think that's unlikely in the case of your betta.

Water quality issues can cause that, too, but that's not likely either, since you keep your water pristine. However, it may be possible that previous to your aquiring him he was in poor water quality for an extended period of time.

There is an eye fungus that can cause what appears to be cataracts in fish. If that's what it is then immediate treatment is necessary. There is a med called Eye Fungex by Aquatronics that is helpful. I don't know about its use in bettas, since not all treatments that are beneficial for most fish are safe for bettas.

Here's a link to a site that describes it.
