How many true SAEs can I put in my planted 40g breeder? Right now the stocklist is:

3 Pearl Gourami
6 Harlequin Rasboras
6 Peppered Corycats
7 Nerite Snails
assorted ramshorn snails

Don't want to overstock but would really like to get 2 or 3.

Stick to 3 as the max.

Get 2, they like a buddy but get pretty big. I'd get 3-4 more rasboras instead of a third SAE. I have 6 in 1 tank & 10+ in another, much better schoolers with more. Just a suggestion...

I have to disagree about getting more than one. This fish gets to 5 inches and takes up quite a bit of tank space. And in my case two of them did not always get along. They had rare but violent fights as they got bigger. One of them died of his wounds so now I have one SAE, which is more than enough for a 40g IMO.
Maybe this guy is unusually aggressive but he is the bully of the tank. When he is in a foul mood he will zip around the tank and bump other fish out of his way. Does not do harm but he is annoying and creates stress for his tankmates.

Check with Mgamer to see if he's got any SAE's left to sell.

It depends on size. Many of them don't live long enough to get really big.

If you have other places to put them you can start with five or so small guys and remove as necessary. I tend to over-purchase certain fish in the idea that I may lose a few over time.
