So I'm starting again with a 33 gallon FW tank. About a year and a half ago I found instructions to cycle the tank with shrimp (the kind from the grocery store!) The cycle worked (took about 3 weeks). Does anyone know the process for this method? I think I put them in (into a stocking so I did not have decaying shrimp floating all over the tank) and then let the ammonia get started? Any help would be appreciated!

they use it in marine set ups..but recommend placing the shrimp in an old nylon pantyhose(easier to clean)

I'm not sure it will expedite the cycling tho

Gotcha - is it supposed to work with FW? Or did I just get lucky last time?

i always thought it was a freshwater method as well....and all you did was put it inside a pair of stockings or equivalent.

from your first post it sounds like you already have an established tank. if so, you can use some media from your filter.

it works in either set up..

really all you are doing is supplying ammonia to the bacteria . as the shrimp decays it produces waste(ammonia)

Thanks! I am going to get the process started tonight.

I HAD an established tank but was frustrated when my pretty angels died :( Took me a while to get over it but I'm ready to start again now.

Should I use raw shrimp?
