How can I start the cycling process? I read that I have to add ammonia to it to get it started. How do I do that? I'm thinking I just drop some food in there to start it off with.

I just need to know how to get the ball rolling I guess.

Do you own a test kits so you could test ammonia nitrite and nitrates? If not your gonna need one. They got a thread here that explains how to cycle a new aquarium here in the "Freshwater Newbie Forum" Section at the top. Check it out its very imformative

the ammonia test is the most important one in the beginning of a cycle, then nitrite, then nitrate. what type (drops or strips) are your tests?

you should also pick up a nitrite test and a nitrate test, or just go get an API freshwater master test kit. it may seem expensive, but the kit allows you to do many, many tests and is quite accurate if the instructions are followed.

read the sticky on fishless cycling, that is your first step.

If you trust anyone you know, you can always ask for his established filter media as long as you are sure the media is free to parasites, etc that will be detrimental to the fish's health.
