My lfs sells LR, but I don't know how to tell if it's any good. There are a few different colored algae growing on it, but I don't see any other critters on it at all. Is that normal? What can I look for on the rock to verify it's quality. They don't have any special lighting on the rock, so I know the coralline algae won't be colorful. But should I see other things on the rock? I'm really hoping my tank can establish a healthy copepod population, so I can one day get a mandarin dragonette.

I think your best bet is to order online if you can. I've heard a lot of good things about www.gulf-view.com and http://www.tampabaysaltwater.com. A lot of hitch hikers. The rock at my LFS doesn't look that great. Similar conditions: low light, etc. The rock doesn't look good at all. And they charge $7.99/lb. For that kind of money, I could order rock from TBS with s/h and it would still come out cheaper!

I already cycled my tank, so uncured rock is no good, I don't think you can buy cured rock online. Also, online vendors sell in bulk, and I only need about 10 to 15 lbs. I found a local reefkeeper willing to sell me 15# for $35, so I think I'm all set!

Yep- straight from the Gulf to sorting tanks then shipped in water to your tank.
They have a nifty video detailing their seeding and collecting methods on their website. (http://www.tampabaysaltwater.com/)
We're about two weeks away from ordering our "package" from them.

Yes I am going to order from them by pieces too. I have some rock in my tank now that is dead besides hair algea. I will get the rest of my rock and clean up crew there. Did not intend to get live sand from them though. Wonder if I really should about a 3inch sand bed right now.

Thanks for the tip, but I still only need a small amount, and buying online will be just too much money for my needs anyways.
