View Full Version : Best filter for 28 gal euro tank?

Hi, I just bought a 28 gallon bowfront Perfecto (Marineland) tank, and it came with a Penguin 150 biowheel filter. I had a biowheel filter on a previous tank and replaced it with an AquaClear HOB filter because I found the biowheel noisy and annoying. (I've since sold the old equipment so I no longer have the AC filter..)

I didn't really want the Biowheel this time 'round, but like I said it came with the tank. I have 2 questions:

1) If I decide to use the biowheel filter for my new tank (cuz afterall, it was 'free'!), is a Penguin 150 going to provide enough filtration for a 28 gallon euro tank?

2) If I don't use the Penguin and buy an AquaClear filter instead, should I go with a higher model, e.g. the AquaClear 70, rather than the one rated for a 28 gal tank? I'm assuming a bigger filter is better...

3) Is an aerator really necessary? (e.g. air pump with a stone or bubble curtain).

I appreciate everyone's advice and past experience on this.
Thx

1) The penguin 150 would be the bare minimum
2) This will be the best option IMO I would go with the AC 70
3) No

Thanks ChrisK - I agree! I'm going to pick up an AC70 tonight. :)
