Check out Star_Rider's thread:

The Catalina is a Jebao. Jebo and Jebao apparently was one company in Asia at one time, but they split up. Jebao seems to have carved out its territory which includes the US, although they are not well recognized here.

Not knockin it.....

But typically you get what you pay for.

true in many cases..

but with many of these offbrand filters they are simply overstock from big name companys such as ehiem... all they do is slap different labels on them and sell them 70% off

its better to at least make some money off of them then have them go to waste I guess.

Its the same reason I buy most of my HOB filters at wal-mart... they are just marineland filters (darn good).. with different labels on them, and at a fraction of the price of a normal marineland

Odessa is another name the Jebao's go by in the US. The Jebao brand canisters are usu. green, while Odessa's white.

247Plants: I agree you get what you pay for. But you also need to look at the value of what you pay for. I was willing to pay for Rex Griggs's top of the line CO2 regulator (close to $250 shipped) b/c I know it's reliable. It will last a long time and most likely be trouble-free. So in the long run it will save me money and time trouble-shooting w/something with a lesser build quality.
When you look at this canister for $50, though vs. the Eheim Pro II 2028 (what it's trying to copy) at around $300 (and I'm being generous w/that price), you can buy 6 of them and use them for spare parts and what not. It is definitely not the same filter as the Eheim 2028. The quality of build and thoroughness of filtration of the Jebao is not up to par w/Eheim, but it is more than just adequate. And look at some of the other advantages:

1. Parts immediately available. Some Eheim part are very difficult to find.
2. Motor only need to last ~2 yrs. (2 x 6 motors) to outlast an Eheim's motor which have been reported to last ~10 yrs.
3. Convenience of having duplicate canister to move media/materials around during servicing.

I have mine plugged in to a dedicated GFCI unit so that it will cut power if the motor malfunctions. I inspect the housing for cracks whenever I do a media change. If the Jebao was about $100, I would think twice about getting it, but for $50... well, getting 2 or 3 is a good value to me. Star_Rider's been reviewing it in his thread, and he has 3 of them.

i have found this not to be true a lot of times with all aspects of life,.. it's most of the time just a sing song to sell higher priced things ,..

yes some times its true and some not, just research first and shop around,..
there are always equal things priced lower but they arn't easly found,..

I don't think I can ever trust anything made by Jebo/Jebao/Odyssea/whatever they're calling themselves these days.

i had mine for at least 2 years, and i have only one complaint is the motor is on top i like the 350 mags but most of the filters are built just like mine,.. and it works perfect,.. the only trouble i had is i forget i have it,...lol

The only thing that concerns me about these off brands are the moving parts like the motor with respect to reliability, noise, performance and spare parts. I look for a common recurring complaint in a product from customer reviews and what I keep hearing from these off brands is performance (GPH) is drastically low compared to whats advertised like 70% lower, leaks and difficulty obtaining parts, also breakage of inferior plastics used. But I will admit I have been tempted to buy one.

My dad's had one for maybe 4 or 5 years, no problems (as opposed to a Marineland c series he got which doesn't work anymore). I also have one (Jebo 828 or something), running a couple of months (at least 6) no problems so far. My ehiem 2128 or w/e (the pro 2 with heater) has had a heater failure (though I heard it was common) and almost killed all of my fish. For the price, its hard to beat a jebo.

I have had my eye on that largest 929 (I think) model, have seen some advertised for like $60 free shipping and almost bought it.Im sure I could fix any basic problems with it.
