I have been fighting a major algae bloom for about 2 months now, and I haven't been able to get rid of it, until now...I have been performing a 25%WC a week, cut the feeding in half, and only have the light on for 4 hours a day, and I couldn't get rid of the green water problem...so I figured when I got the time, I would end up completely breaking down the 38g and starting all over again. But, I came home from work 2 days ago and noticed the aquarium wasn't as cloudy-I asked my wife if she had cleaned the tank, but she hadn't. Then I came home from work yesterday, and tank is as clear as it was before the algae bloom.(I haven't performed a WC in 2 weeks!) Whatever the reason is-I don't know, but I am thankful...:thm:

Glad to hear that green water can be quite the PITA

Maybe your aquarium was full of mini aliens and the mother ship came by and beamed them up???

Either that- or the PWC/Lights out you'd been doing finally paid off!

You could change more water per week if you wanted to and it could only help. Green water usually resolves itself over time.

You can never change too much water! It helps to get rid of any build up of any excess nutrients.

I did leave the lights off for 3 days, and the anacharis died off(who cares-LOL), but all of the other plants seem to be fine...

direct sunlight is the problem, never set up a tank close to a window where the sunlight can shine in.

The algae eventually consumed all of the nitrates/phosphates. What are your nitrates reading now?

Direct sunlight CAN cause green water but it is not the sole contributor by any means.

test the water parameters of your tap water. maybe you were feeding it with the partial water changes?
