View Full Version : Big guy picking on the little guy...

Hi all,

I had a tragic tank event which has completely changed the dynamics between my fish. We had a heater failure while away for the weekend and all of my tiger barbs and one of my beautiful Gouramis died. This left the other Gourami, a dwarf gourami a cory and pleco. We had this group together for over a year. The larger Gourami had been a pretty peaceful fish, but has now taken to serious fin nipping to the point where part of the dwarf gourami's tail and lower fin has been chewed off. He tends to hide by the filter and behind the UGF tubes where the big guy can't get to him (but clearly, his tail has been accessible!). The dwarf still comes out to get fed.

We've replaced the heater and the tank stats are perfect. I'm getting ready to add more barbs, but I'm afraid that they might "join in" and harrass the dwarf (my previous group of 3 barbs were very mild and didn't bother anyone - but the local pet store indicates that the barbs might fin nip too...)

Any thoughts on how I can help the little guy?

Barbs can be fin nippers but I have read that if you keep them in groups that harass each other rather than other fish.
