What are some good inexpensive substitutions to regular biocubes and what-not? Like what can I use to filter the water that is inexpensive? Would lava rocks be ok to use?

pot scrubbers, ceramic beads, sponge, old carbon, lava rock

anything pourous, with lots of surface area

alright. thanks!

Are you ready kids?

OOOOOOOooooooH!!!!.....

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?!... Spongebob Squarepants!

Absorbant and yellow, POROUS IS HE!!!

well.... you know the rest...

will broken up red brick work at all?

or can i use just regular gravel in an empty HOB filter to collect the good bacteria?

i tried using an average kitchen sponge once, want to know what happened? the sponge disolved and the next morning there were little bits of sponge-material floating all over the tank and the water turned blue (the color of the sponge i used). a lot of my guppies died that day.

I've used regular sponges in the home made canister I made. They worked beautifully until I took the filter apart again.
