I'm looking to save considerable money and was given three silk plants from Michaels. They seem sturdy and contain no wire. I've googled several different versions of "Are craftstore plants safe for aquariums?" And seem to get so many mixed answers I'm unsure.

What's everyone's take before I stick them in the aquarium. I only know they're from Michaels "Silk Garden Shop" collection and that they contain no wire. My 55 gallon is very sparse since I usually had an oscar in there, and with goldfish I'm again able to replant it. Live plants are out of the question because I simply don't have the time to deal with them. And Aquatic store prices are... insane -_-;

Oh and if this isn't in the right forum I apologize. :)

bump...

I'd also like to know the answer to this question :)

I think this shouldnt be attempted but if u must I would try putting them in say a bucket of water first and let them sit to see what happens. Sometimes they dyes leak and this in turn can harm the fish. Better safe then sorry right? Thats what I would do. Since silk plants are not made to deal with high amounts of water they may leak like my moms did when it tipped over into a puddle of water and turned the water red and green.

You're good to go with silks or plastics as long as there's no wire inside to corrode.

and yet the lfs has so many plants with wires in them.....

i might be cautious about putting just any wireless silk plant in your tank. as GER1023 mentioned, the dyes might leach out into the water. maybe do the bucket test for a good couple of weeks first to be assured that the dyes won't leach?

Yes thats what I would do BFM I know I wouldnt want to put silk plants into my aquarium go to sleep wake up to find my aquarium a funky colored cloud and my fish gasping for air cuz I wanted to save a few bucks.

Wireless silk plants are fine. If you are concerned about the dye leaching, put it in a bucket of warm white vinegar for about 30 minutes then thoroughly rinse. Vinegar can be used to set any fabric type dye.
