Is that a true marimo ball? did anyone has an algae outbreak from them? i heard that from some people but also heard some other swear that they have never have any problem with them.

Also does fish eat them? I have 2 SAE in the tank so i don't want it end up in the SAE belly.

Thanks

Yes, that is a true marimo ball. No it doesn't cause an algae outbreak. The fish shouldn't tear it apart and it is too large for your fish to swallow. They will rasp at it but I doubt it would eat it or cause it any harm to the plant. Hope this helps.

Marimo is a moss, not an algae. it will trap small food particles and your sae will graze on it, but no fish should actually eat it. you can tear it apart and tie it down to something and it will take over it eventually.

That is incorrect. Marimo is in fact an algae, Cladophora aegagropila. It can and will be eaten by fish that like algae. One of the members that purchased some from me lost them to a goldfish attack.

I grow and sell Marimo, it takes me a year at least to get one to sellable size. If you decide to get one, I can give you tips for caring for it. I have never had an algae outbreak from one and I have owned hundreds.

My bad, i was at the LFS store today and asked the same question about the marimo balls and i was told they are a moss. I have flying foxes and they told me they wouldnt touch the stuff :swear:

dont trust your lfs! thanks for correcting me

Is it safe from a Pleco?

I make sure I drop Algae tabs in before bed.

Pleco hasn't attacked it yet- but my Bulldog has done a fabulous job on my diatoms.

Not a problem, we all learn somewhere :)

I would say yes. Plecos are much less actual algae eaters than we are often lead to believe. Are you giving your guy any veggies? He needs them.

oh, i guess i can't really keep them now then, maybe later when i finally have $ to set up a shrimp tank :p:, now my hungry SAE would just devour it.

any tip from keeping it spherical? i also saw on Aquabid someone selling a piece of driftwood totally covered with what he/she calls marimo. i don't want that. how do you keep it nice and round?
