I bought a 55 gallon tank set up with stand and lights yesterday! And that's wonderful but in all of the excitement of sanding and staining it I left the light fixtures and tank in the back of my truck. Well the tank is fine but since there was a broken window in my bed cover the light fixtures got wet!!! They aren't soaked but there was some water in one end of them. UGHH it seems like the drama with trying to get my tank set up will never end!

But I guess I have a few questions,
Do you think they are still going to work, and when should I plug them in to test them?
If they don't work what kind of lighting should I buy to replace them?

first of all, try to dry them out as best as you can and shake water out if u can. Let it dry for a day or 2. Electronics will work so as long as they are dry. If you dropped a cellhpone in a pool of water with it off and u let it dry, many times the phone will still work as there is no water present to short circuit it. I bet you it will work just make sure you dry it off really well.

that would be awesome! I hope they work! I will want to eventually get new lighting but just can't afford it after buying the new set up and my lovely EHIEM! But what kind of lighting should I get when I can afford it?

Remove the bulbs if it's in the fixture. Let it dry out for a couple days, then use a hair dryer to dry out the rest of the water in the crevices (especially where the pins fit) if you need to before putting back the bulbs and turning it on. When you decide to switch to planted, check out AH supply's 55G retrofit kit for your existing light hood. I have the 2x55w kit for my 55G, and you can grow the majority of plants with that set up. They include everything so no extra trips to the hardware store, and the instructions are fairly easy to follow. GL!

there are DIY type stuff like www.ahsupply.com you can do www.fishneedit.com i have heard some good things about them, i would be contacting them with alot of questions before a purchase of my own or you can do mainstream like GLO, Current-USA, marineland, TEK, Coralife, etc. You dont need much wattage, you should be aiming for about 1.5-2wpg, 2wpg being on the higher side.

I have dropped my lights into my tanks before.. and they still worked after drying

I dont see any reason they wouldnt TBH-- if the water was still present they might blow a breaker or something.. or fry a ballast-- but if you dry them they will be fine

I can't tell you how good it is to hear that! I have been on this crazy string on unfortunate events with my tanks I'm ready for just one thing go right!
