Southdown from Home Depot is supposed to be the Holy Grail of sands but it's impossible to find. I just bought 100lbs of finer than sugar silica play sand from Mendard's. No diatom problems after 9 months (of course that could change in a day) and it only cost me $4.

I bought aragonite sand for 2 inches from the LFS. It is nice colour and also adds organisms also I think. Supposed to be cleaned but I am not sure , mine seemed to have some junk in it.
Was costly. At the moment my macro algaes have discovered it and are rooting into it. So when I harvest the macros seems I make a little mess. I do notice some life in the sand. Maybe it came from the live rock.

I used Mystic pool filter sand because I liked how white it was.

Southdown isn't available here so I dumped in pure white silica-based sandblasting sand. It's been working perfectly for almost two years now :)
