can anyone suggest where to order from? Discus Hans I hear only does wholesale & requires minimum orders of at least 60. I presume they will be pricey considering the quality one will get - but when you add the shipping is so expensive per fish!

Hans will most likely fill your order if you know what you want. He is a nice guy and has fantastic discus. I don't recommend going anywhere but directly through Hans if you want Stendkers. You may say it's pricey but it really isn't that bad when you break it down. The most you would want would be either 8 2.5" discus to grow out or 5-6 4-5+" fish. I strongly recommend getting the largest fish that you can afford because they can be a pain in the a$$ to grow out. Juvies need regular water changes of no less than 50% every other day at a minimum and all the food you will run through trying to grow out the juvies to nice adults really isn't worh it. I'm doing that same thing right now. I dont' regret my purchase, but they are a lot of time to take care of and I wish I had purchase 4-5 larger discus to start with to add to my community tank. That way I'd know what they look like as adults. Juvies can sometimes look nice and then develop bad shapes or poor coloring, and I'm after the best colors and shapes in my tanks.

I ordered 15 juvies so I have my work cut out for me. will take a picture of each while in the bags so I can reasonably guess who they are when they are released & hope when they get bigger I can still tell which is which! So I will feel like a proud father & will take a lot of shots!
this may be a good thread to post to see if AC'ers can guess which strain is each!!

I don't know how that is toture. That is what is done to them before shipping. Lowering the water level until they are sideways calms the fish so they don't freak out and break the bags or hurt themselves. It's no different than in the dry season where wild discus would encounter the same exact thing, except many would die from not being able to find deeper water and would be trapped.

I agree, it is in no way a form of torture. It keeps the discus from thrashing around while being readied for shipment. They are very calm when this is done. I have done it myself to more closely visually inspect a dicus. The tips of the dorsal fins of the discus are extremely sharp so they need to be handled cautiously for shipping and shipped in very thick bags to prevent the dorsal fins from ripping holes in the bags.

it happens when doing large water changes too.
I have seen discus tanks get virtually 100% water changes.. the discus simply lay on their sides until the water level rises.

so when I do my WC this shouldn't stress them out, right? I hope?!

yeah! I have seen a lot of sellers/breeders (especially the importers of malaysian & indonesian discus) show pics with the strains flat on their sides but also on top of each other! how can that be a calming effect?? claustrophibia!

Who knows what goes through their minds when they are piled like that, it is certain that they don't do any thrasing at all though. I personally wouldn't do the 100% water change, but I do somewhere around 80%, their dorsal fins stick out of the water when I do water changes. They don't seem to mind at all.

when you do WC, do you use conditioners since it's so much to chg at one time? which do you use? Prime?
aging water I would need a large garbage can.

I've never aged my water though my water is very stable. All you need to do if you have chlorines/chloramines is either dose the water that you are putting into the tank or dose the tank for a full dosage before you add the untreated water. Prime is an excellent water conditioner to use.

My water is stable so no need to age. Empty with the python, doing gravel vaccing the whole time. Adjust temp at the faucet to match tank, add a full dose of conditioner to the water left in the tank, I happen to prefer NovAqua+ which my fish prefer too, and fill 'er up! I position the python to stream the clean water at the side of the tank to do some offgassing. I actually do all my tanks this way every week, the fish love all that fresh water. Except my fry tanks which I do nearly every day!

I change 60 to 70% of my discus tank water every other day, with about a 10% on the off days to pick up uneaten food and poop. I have accidentally drawn the water down too far before and my discus don't care for that at all. They get nervous and sometimes thrash if I move too quickly near the tank when the water's down too low. Otherwise, they seem to enjoy the new water infusions. I use prime and sometimes sodium thiosulfate, depending on whether the local water co. is shocking the system.

My water is also very stable.
I do at least 50% 2X week. on tho I have slipped and done much greater changes.(90%+) the Discus and Angels never got really stressed. they just lie flat and go back to vertical as the water level rises.
I think a big factor in avoiding stress is getting the Fish use to your intervention and maintenance schedule.

I agree! I get impatient sometimes with them either while I've got the water level down or the tank is full ... and I'm trying to wipe the glass down, or pick out some ramshorn snails......I CANNOT SEE cause they are right in front of my face and by my hands. I have to shoo them away from me. LOL!

so regardless if one does 50% 60% 80% still do the full tank dosage on the leftover water.

I add a full dose regardless.

sodium thiosulfate? Is this in which product or stand alone? I don't remember seeing this - & what is it used for normally?
On Prime dosing for 72gal bowfront (which will vary 68-72 gal full) - how about this regimen? whatever I change I double the dose of the water replacement? So if 50% more change then it's full dosage.
Because If I change only 10-20% I'd rather not dose the full tank volume, make sense?
thks all

Seachem just recommends to dose for the volume of water.
I asked them and they simply said the chemicals can be bound to other elements in the existing tank water.
It really depends on how you add the water.
