I have 55 gal reef tank. I was always under the asumption a sand sifting star spends most of the time under the sand. Mine runs around the sides of the tank and only goes in the sand preidicallly. Is this normal ?

Yes it is normal, but typically means they don't have enough in the sand (food) to entice them to remain under the sand surface. It is very normal for them to run around the tank anyway. How long has your system been up and running?

Mine gets lost every once in a while and I wonder if he's died and then he'll show up climbing the side of the glass. He climbs over the corals but doesn't seem to bother them.

the sand bed is about 4 years old. ironically enough after I posted this he diapeared. I havent seen him since. Thanks !!
