Well, if my knowledge of physics is correct, if it is airtight, it will be watertight.
H20 molecules are larger than air molecules so anything that will seal in air should seal in water.
HOWEVER, under pressure it might be a different story. I would say that you could probably use this for a canister, but maybe let some others on the boards answer before trying it :D

Don't use the metal pails ... one clip and they rust (inside or out). Use an equivalent size plactic pail/barrel with a screw on lid. With some effort you can find a food grade plastic one with a neoprene gasket. I have a 55gl which was used to ship apple juice concentrate or cherries (can't remeber which). I'm sure you can find what ever size you want. Try a grocery store deli - 1st, a drum recycler - 2nd (where I got mine less than $20), a manufacturer - 3rd or the expensive route is a camping store that sells the small drums to cannoers to keep their gear dry (crazy price).
Hope this helps.

I understand your concern with the rust but they have an option on the metal ones for them to be coated to epoxy so im fairly sure they will be very resilient so chipping

Sorry I didn't check your 2nd link. These look more inline. Make sure they are safe for food storage and seal with more then 1/4 or 1/2 turn. The barrel I have has a lid that screws on with a few complete turns, like a masson jar.

The epoxy can chip or get worn away with grit or medium vibrating or under constent motion from water circulation.

ahh the fun of creating your own..

I use to do that but after awhile I decided I could find an inexpensive alternative.

Ok I think I'm going to go with a plastic one and thanks for the link but I'm looking at about the same price and 2-3 times the gph and this is going to assist my sump for my 300g ray tank it will be filled to the fullest with nothing but pillow stuffing

now that's a water polisher! lol.

i would definitely go plastic over metal bucket, even if the metal one was lined with something.

but that much money for a 2 1/2 gallon plastic bucket and lid? A tad pricey in my mind!

I would love to see this tank set up.

what are you planning for a return pump for the canister?

I have several of the Catalina canisters...they seem to work well.

I have one in use with my 110X marine w/fuge.

I am about ready to set up a canister to run with my 75/sump.

you can never have too much filtration. ;)

Oh ya that is true I am looking into danner mag drive pumps or maybe little giant. The little giant are much cheaper so I may test one out first I can those buckets much cheaper locally so a complete build will cost about 60-70 and roughly 500 to 700gph
