synspillum colors - single vs. pair

For those of you who keep V. Synspillum, how much of a color difference do you notice between an individual being housed alone (or in a mixed cichlid community) versus a pair. Also, how much of a color difference is there between sexes - it doesn't look like very much as far as I can tell from pictures.
 
I have a large M & F Synspillum, but in a community cichlid tank. The male does have a bit more color. The depth of color varies from day to day. They are a bit skittish by nature compared to most other cichlids. The male is noticeably bigger.

Mine keep acting like they want to breed, but I dont think it will happen in the community cichlid tank. The Midas cichlid pair is dominant and they breed every few weeks. Also have Nics in there trying to breed.
