So while looking at some plants online and at a few stores around here i see that all kinds need different lighting <yea i know DUH>. My question is what determines low/med/high lighting. I currently have a 25watt on a 30 gallon tank, im sure that is low lighting but what are the general WPG for each of the low/med/high? thx for any help

you have almost 1wpg, thats low lighting. 2wpg is med lighting, and you can grow a reasonable amount of plants in 2wpg with out needing any co2. I like to keep the tanks at 2wpg. Anything higher is sometimes overkill and unnecessary if you dont have co2. I keep my tanks at 2wpg, and its enough light for my plants to turn pink- something you get from high light.

2 watts per gallon is a good place to start. please dont assume you need to shell out big $$$ for a good light. find out the length of your tank. then check out home depot or lowes or whatever local home furnishings place is near you. find a light of equal length. the packaging should tell you what the light is rated for (30 watts, 60 watts, etc.) the only other thing to keep in mind is the Kelvin rating of the bulbs. most pick between 5000 and 10,000 Kelvin. this is the color spectrum. i like 6500 K (fairly yellow), but you may want to go more towards the 10,000. this is a choice that is entirely up to you.

i suggest the home depot lighting thing because if you decide you dont like what you get, you arent out a ton of money
