Hello i am new on this forum, my name is rhys. I have had only a little experience with fish and now i have just recently got a 4foot by 1.5foot by 2.5foot high tank and i have just set it up and it is now running until this sunday before i purchase my fish. I have some drift wood i found in the river that i put there and i was wondering if it was going to rot?? The fish i have chosen to put in there would be 3 silver sharks, 3 silver dollars and 3 angelfish. I wanted to know if there were any other shark species that would go good with the tank as i really want to make it a shark only tank. Thanks, Rhys.

I suggest you do some more research...

have you cycled your tank? i'd look that up asap if you dont know what that means. I'd go fishless cycling too.

Further, by silver sharks i assume you mean Irridescant sharks? if so, these are not suited for the common aquarium at all. They get HUGE and are very nervous fish that prefer to be kept in large groups and have been known to break heaters and crack tanks with all of the head-butting they do in the tank as a result of being confined.

Most all shark species (all that i can think of) are not meant to be kept as aquarium pets, unless you've got a 1000g tank kicking around.

As for the driftwood, it depends what kind of wood. Also, it would need to be treated....do a search on this forum and on google and you should come up with lots of info.

Rainbow or red-tail or black sharks (basically 3 different color variants of the same thing) could go into that tank, but only 1 in total, as they are very aggressive towards their own species.

Silver sharks are just another name for Bala Sharks, think they're a color morph with no black in the fins. They'll get to about 1 foot in size eventually.

I have both b bala sharks, and albino rainbow sharks in my 55. I also have two angels, 2 danios, and 2 three spot gouramis.

Ah, I forgot about red tailed black sharks and the like. However, I would never keep a bala shark (that gets to be a foot and is an active swimmer) in a 55 gallon tank...but thats just me.

i would definitely boil the wood before i put it in the tank, IMO

Thanks for the feed back...
yes i meant silver shark as the other name for it bala. I think they are a beautiful looking fish. I don't know your measurement as in gallons etc because i am australian and we use litres...if someone could give me a way of converting gallons to litre that would be a great help.

1 gallon = 3.785 liters

So the 55 gallon tank would be just over 208 L
Given your dimensions, your tank would be about 15 cubic feet or 100-110 gallons so probably an estimated 375-400 Liters
Is that about what you thought?

Can't help you out with an opinion on fish as I'm a newbie too, but I can do the math. ;)

Also... do you use feet for measurements in Australia instead of meters? Or did you just do that for our sake?

woops forgot to add that yeah that is what i measured it to be when i added the water.

we use metres but when it comes to fish tanks we use feet. Strange.

We have these "diamond shark" things in our LFS, but I'm pretty sure they're a kind of barb.

In a tank that size, you might be able to get away with 2 rain/red/black sharks, there's enough space for them to each have a section.
