Assuming there was little else in the tank (a small school of tetras or similar) how many would you add to a tank this size?
 
I'd be careful with your small tetras. Large clowns love to eat anything that fits their mouths. How big are the clowns you are buying? 10-15 is not a bad start.
 
I have 5 right now, they are max 5 inches and I would imagine I wouldn't be able to find any at the store any bigger than that. Not too concerned if I bought tetras and they were eaten. A bit of a waste of money, but I would take the chance. The were with neons for a short time with no trouble!
