I posted this under a different thread but didn't get any responses... sorry for the "repost"

I should be recieving 2 baby koi angels from a member here next week. They'll be going into my 55g moderately planted which currently houses:
5 banded rainbows
5 bronze cories
2 SAE
2 bamboo shrimp

Apparently they're really small and my rainbows are about 4" right now. Should I grow these guys out in my 10g QT for a couple months to make sure they get adequate food and don't get harrassed by the rainbows while they're still so little?

Thanks!

I would do 4-6 weeks in the 10g tank. I did that with 15 quarter sized angels in a 10g and they turned out great. I moved them to a 29g when they were about just over half dollar size. It took about 4 weeks for that. Feed them well and keep up on the water changes and you will see good growth.

I would. You were planning on QT them anyway right? Just extend it for a few more weeks. They should grow fast with a good diet and plenty of water changes.

I'll do that, thanks guys.

Do you think crushed flake is ok for the most part with some frozen bloodworms maybe once a week? For flake food, I use Ken's

thats what i have been doing with my angels and they are growing like weeds! at first they didnt know what to do with the blood worms, now they go in to a feeding frenzy! they LOVE the blood worms

Yes, use the grow out as a qt .

I QT 4-6 weeks all my fish .

yeah, i did that with my older angel because he was getting picked on. i gave him a mixture of frozen brine shrimp and tropical flake, and he grew extremely fast, and ate like a pig. very good idea.

i found the best diet to get angels to grow at a good rate and keep healthy is a mix of flake, tetra crisps, frozen mysis shrimp, frozen bloodworms, NLS cichlid pellets (the small ones), shrimp pellets, betta pellets, the occasional bit of zuchinni, and whatever other treats you know are healthy and nutritious for your fish. basically, there is no one wonder food that makes them grow, but a well rounded and healthy diet.

Beefheart mixes that contain vegetables, salmon/cod, shrimp, and some tropical flakes along with a multivitamin or two would be a "wonder food" that would put mass on the angels quickly. However, I agree that a balanced diet is better for any fish and that varying the diet plays a key role in their health. Beefheart mixes tend to make a fish look "thick" and I really don't like the look the it gives fish. It doesn't seem natural, kinda like a person on steroids.
