I was wondering if anyone here knew about a cheap place to order fish stuff (filters heaters etc.). I have been looking a bit but haven't had much luck. The Big Al's Canada site it REALLY bad btw, I can get cheaper prices at my LFS. If you have a suggestion plz leave a link to the online store, thanks!

Well why dont you try Big Al's. Thier site is:

www.bgalsonline.com

when you go to that site they will give you a choice to go onto thier u.s page or canada page, click on the canadian page and they have a lot of fish supplies on sale online.

I have recently tried purchasing my stuff through www.ptesolutions.com since afew people in another board said it is cheaper even for canadians. He was right i looked at what i could buy it here for and what big al's online had it for and petsolutions prices were 10-15-20$ cheaper. I bought a AC300 for 21.49$(27$can) and it was 42$can at big al's. I also ought a Ebo jager 200w heater for 18.59(24$can) which was 15$cheapr then what i can get for it here.

So basically even though you have to pay to get it shipped, since you are saving so much shipping pays for itself. But i would still suggest buying in larger quanities to get your moneys worth.

plus petsolutions sells New life Spectrum foods which we can't get up here in canada. That is why i really wanted to try it.

Hmm... That doesn't sound cheaper than www.thatfishplace.com. I ordered few hundred dollars worth of items from them and the price seem pretty good (cheaper than ordering from Big Al's Canada or MOPS). BUT the shipping was a mess - I didn't realize that they shipped ground which took 6 weeks to get here!

So.... the price is definitely cheaper to order from US (not as cheap as you might think since you also have to pay duty), but at least for me, it took forever to get here...

My box from petsolutions.com only took a week and a half to get here. And i didn't have to pay any extra fees(duty,Gst). I was expecting to have to pay somethign at the door but didn't have to.

Curious, how big was your package? I ordered computer components before, and paying duty was simply a matter of luck - they sometimes check the package, other times not. I noticed that smaller packages shipped through USPS has much better chance of not doing through duty compare to large packages or through UPS/FedEx...

My box was quite big, about 2'x1 1/2'x1 1/2'. I dont' kow why i didn't have to pay the GST at the door. The guy i was talking to before i ordered said i would have to pay GST at the door, he did.

When I used to set up small aquariums, I ordered stuff from MOPS. The prices are pretty competitive; at least they used to be.
I didn't have any problems with hardware either.

MOPS does have a competitive price compare to other online stores. PetsandPonds also have a good price but with more limited selections. The issue I had with all of them is that US online companies were offering most items at much cheaper prices. I bought about 5 150w Ebo Jager heaters, and even after the duty, GST and shipping, it still came out quite a bit cheaper than any of the online Canadian stores. LFS sells them at even higher cost...

I guess one factor is because the currency exchange rate is now sitting at 1.3 instead of 1.45...

I'll probably order from thatfishplace.com again when I need to buy something in quantity...
