supposedly being released as a product in 2010, this seems to me like a possibly inadequate solution... but it's an interesting start.

the way rain water is filtered is by going though the soil, it may work or it may end up being like peat. who knows, only trying it would tell...

just like aqurium plants, those plants need other nutrients as well. and how long untill the soil becomes saturated with nitrate? i think that the soil would eventually become polluted and would not be able to hold nutrients and would dump back into the tank.

looks a lot like a toilet tank.

It's basically just another refugium.

Plants still need potassium, zink, iron, and other elements that might be harmful to fish or cause algae. I doubt that you could grow tomatoes in it like it states on the website. Some mosses, on the other hand, might work if water is dripping over it or mangroove.

well if you adjust your diet accordingly to be high in potassium, zinc, iron, and other elements essential to plant growth you just might be able to use it as a toilet tank.

It does look like a toilet. I wouldn't get it, I don't think it will sell. It may or may not work, perhaps the water doesn't really go all the way through the soil, maybe just through the bottom part or something, IDK.

It doesnt have enough plant mass to really support more than a couple of small fish that have a light bio-load.

Basically its just a clear hydroponics setup, and some stoner got the idea that fish would look awesome living in the reservoir.

i have something similar to that running on a turtle tank
basicly you are growing plants the same way a heavily planted tank has no nitrates, except the plants arent going to be in the water.
yes plants need all those other nutrients but some plants will be hardier and some of those nutrients will be provided by fish food/poo.
there is still a stocking limit (which the turtle surpasses haha) to keep the water still low in nitrates.

The second(pic on their page) tank housing 4 bettas, could be interesting.

smells like a "betta in a vase" idea to me...

There are similar plant filtration systems utilized already. A mangrove sump system is used by some dedicated hobbyists to eliminate nitrates.

The one huge disadvantage I see with this design is that you cannot clean it. At least with a traditional filtration system, you can lightly wash off the filter media.
