After going to stores and going home emptyhanded in the last few weeks, a black oranda caught my eye as I spent my time testing out the reaction of the other goldfish to food in a shop. Of course, she appeared out of nowhere and I stared quickly at her surveying her fins, eyes, wen growth, etc. Everything she has, is what I exactly wanted. I thought to myself, "Surely, she wants me to bring her home" as she continues parading in front of me in delight so I shrugged off the "conservative" feeling and requested an employee to get her for me. I went home happily with her in tow. She's really hyperactive and readily joined the other goldies upon introduction!

I need to get my camera sorted at the moment as the lens seem to have faulted itself.:shakehead:

In the meantime, here's a gander of another oranda similar to her. Images as always don't do them much justice.

This may be a better representation as she is actually darker than the one shown in the picture above.

you finally found a fish! lol. congrats on the new finkid. but what's this i hear you didn't qt???????

All the fish by the petstore owner have been selected and already quarantined for almost 3-5 weeks since he got them so I didn't feel the need to do it this time especially as the store owner sees to it they are in right order. He admitted of all the people, only about five of us even bother to buy goldfish as the rest of the local hobbyists gawk on flowerhorns.

Being a Chinese himself, he noticed the frequent goldfish enthusiasts in our area are mostly Chinese because of the superstitious belief that goldfish bring wealth and prosperity. I have a Chinese ancestry myself but I am not one of those to believe in superstitions (except maybe if I get a clover leaf and a rabbit's foot).:grinno:

Not all of his goldfish impressed me though but to each, his own. That's why I seem a nitpicker lately as I said in another thread.LOL! I've actually been around the store almost daily. He does not allow anything else to mix with goldfish, just the same large batch of goldfish. His store is by far the most impressive but he had to be conservative because not everyone loves goldfish and most of his stocks end up staying with him too long.

sounds much the same situation as my favourite lfs around the corner from workjob, where i was able to observe all of my fish in a qt environment for at least a month. isn't it nice to know there are good shops like that out there?

as for the superstitions...... (BFM pauses, knocks on wood)

Yes, BFM. We're extremely lucky to have responsible petstores thus we sometimes can overlook the necessity of quarantine period but that depends. Doesn't always hurt to quarantine at the expense of the current stock although redundancy can be meaningless sometimes if they already made sure your fish are unlikely to carry any health issues. I can actually trust the petstore owner to his maintenance and responsbility. I've known him for over four years now. I still quarantine sometimes if I feel paranoid and actually did with his other goldies because of the short time frame since he was shipped those goldies and I could not simply risk infecting my main tank. I didn't this time as I reasoned earlier.

Oh, and as for superstitions, BFM, they actually believe the fatter, the goldfish, the more luck it brings, not that I like every goldfish with extremely fat appearance that they could barely swim anymore of course.:)

and i bet ya don't let yer unicorn get too pudgy either, lol!

but i agree, a fat fish is just as unhealthy as a fat human.

I just love the darker colored goldies.. congrats, Lupin!!!

Thanks, Kashy!:hearts:

I decided to name her, Velvet after her velvety black color. She's doing well so far hogging the foods so I have to make sure she eats moderately. Here's hoping she remains black because her belly has orange tinge and before long, I may have an orange oranda instead.:thud:

Lupin- That's one beautiful fish! Can't wait to see actual photos. Good catch!!

ok Lupin the suspense is killer! where are these pictures of this long awaited goldie that is not so gold?... lol
