I have an Oscar who is around 7 inches long. He's normally a pretty good fish although he just never seems to be full anymore. He has been pushing his head out of the water a couple of inches and taking the food from my mom's hand. (she has to feed them while I am away at college) I've been telling her to stop it but she doesn't. Today my dad was in a hurry and didn't feed him this morning and my Oscar knocked the lid of the tank up and jumped out. I guess he was on the floor for out 15 minutes. He seems to be doing fine now and was eating OK for dinner. What can I do so he will quit jumping? My mom put some rocks on the lid already.

Feed it? Maybe he was not happy that he never got fed that morning and decided to make himself seen :D But yeah if my Oscar had that habbit I would use rocks too. Or a lid that locks if it exists. I don't know how you would go about training an Oscar not to jump out of the tank.

Yeah, rocks or bricks on the hood will stop that behavior. Also, keeping the water level 2 or 3 inches lower might help.

an oscar of that lize could jump out even with the level that low i suggest putting you hand in the water and letting him tank it underwater. also if possiable get sinking cichlid pellets and he can chase them to the bottom.;) ;) ;)

Give him a good talking to. "bad fish bad!" :D Maybe your fish will listen better than mine do. I think once he tries to jump out of the tank with rocks on it he'll learn his lesson. :p Sinking pellets are good too.

Actually, Mtdewlover, I've scolded him a couple of times before when he first started jumping out of the water. Then I'd hold up a plastic bunny that he's afraid of. Oscar's just amaze me how much personality have. When my parents call me up with a question about him I know just what he's doing. He gets really upset if you clean the tank and won't eat for a day and just lays on his side.
I have another question for you guys. Do oscars get more aggressive as they get older. My Oscar has taken to chasing the other fish around since this summer and I was just wondering if it was a phase or if he's just going to be like that. Thanks.
