The other half wants one for our tank.
I think it will annoy them too much. Bit like being in a disco. And the claims are a bit much any truth in them...?
Copied from an eBay auction:
THE BOX STATES

IMPROVES THE COLOUR OF YOUR FISH AND IMPROVES FIN GROWTH
INCREASES THE LIFESPAN OF YOUR FISH
HELPS REDUCE THE GROWTH OF BACTERIA
INCREASES THE GROWTH OF FRY
INCREASES DISEASE RESISTANCE

I think they are pretty but I doubt they do all that they claim. If they do then I will get one for me when I am in bed. Longer life and better fins here I come!!!
Put them on a timer so they are only on during those times you look into the tank and then they turn themselves off. I doubt they hurt or annoy your fish anymore than you walking by the tank does ("Quick hide, here comes the big monster").

All of those claims are utter B.S...
They are nothing more than a novelty item to add a little 'flash' to the tank. It's for the benefit of the viewer..not the fish. Personally, I would never use them myself, though I can understand the interest some people have in them. I like lasers too, but I don't want them in my fish tank..lol. Unless I was Dr. Evil and had a huge tank of sharks with lasers on their heads.

I hear they can make you slimmer, too.

I thought the claims were too good to be true :)
I personally am not keen on them, too Vice City 1980's style.
As for timers - sore subject. We bought 2 electronic timers for the lights but they blew the fuses in the house. Apparnlty then cannot handle the load the fluresent tubes throw out when sparking up...!!
So if we go away the fishes are just going to have to hibernate.
Thanks again.
Claire
About timers: I don't know how I would get along without them. I use timers for ALOT of lights and have never had a problem. I think you need to get some of a better quality. I use timers to replicate as best as possible the natural day/night cycle for my plants and fish.
BTW: that laser crud is total B.S. whens the last time you went to the lake or stream and saw lasers shooting through the water??

i did a little test with the laser system on my latest batch of cory eggs.
i let a little bit of fungus get onto the eggs, and illuminated some of them with the laser, and some with just normal light.
the laser ones came off marginally better, only a 30% hatch rate, compared to the 0% hatch rate of the other set. now, this is probably just fluke, but i can imagine the lasers having an effect to some degree to overloaded SOME bacteria, but overall, the claims are rubbish.
i think they're rather nifty, but i only have them in my axolotl tank, those guys love to chace the laser beams around all day (i don't know how they chase a static laser beam, but they do:D)

mmmm...fish that can feed themselves, just have to force the lid open and tip some food in..
