He's right. It's not a common.

A lot of Pterygoplichthys sp. including pardalis and gibbiceps are considered common. Alas, I hate common names as they offer little validity to the actual identification of a particular species.;)

yeh define common anyways
I picked up a "common pleco" tonight because when I was getting feeders I found one that was jet black no dots and very pale brown eyes and very extended tailfin
will have to see what it turns out to be
my last impulse "common pleco" purchase was a bristlenose who is presently growing out in my 140g

Pterygoplichthys pardalis is one of several species identified as "common" plecos.

true commons can get up to 5 feet.
true commons can get up to 5 feet.
5ft Pleco? The mind boggles...
I think you'd need a gravel vac permenantly strapped to his bum just to get rid of all the poop.

true commons can get up to 5 feet.
wow... I would love to see that....
true commons can get up to 5 feet.
Where did you get this information? Where is an image of the five foot pleco and which pleco do you consider "true common"? On record, Acanthicus adonis is the largest at 39".

whichever pleco it is that most databases i'm assuming recognize as common. i don't know which that may be, and i believe i do have a very bad photo of one on my computer somewhere that i can try to find. i saw it in person at an aquarium.
please keep in mind that my judge of size is very bad, but i know it was at least 4 feet, i was thinking more towards the 5 foot side. i also saw cories there that were at least 4 inches. they looked like they were on steroids.

i don't remember seeing any corydoras barbatus there, i'm talking like juliis and albinos, maybe bronze or emeralds too, all huge. i'm not sure what they feed their fish, but i wish i could score some of that.

i checked and i don't have any, probably because with the lighting in the aquarium all of my pictures came out like crap. i plan on taking another trip back at the end of the summer though, and i'll try to take a better camera and get pictures to show, because they were amazing fish.

=/ i hope you're not really only five feet. like i said, could've been a little less, somewhere between 4 and 5. when i go back this fall, i'll try to find someone in the know how to ask about their sizes. maybe they just grew since you were there or maybe you just didn't see them. there's a lot of room to miss fish.

Like I said, AT THE TIME I don't remember there being a pleco that large. I was probably 10-11 years old at the time.

agreed, again
No they dont.. 48'' at the max.
Really, where are you people getting this info from?lol
I would say pterygoplichthys sp. for sure, and I am going to guess that it would be pterygoplichthys pardalis. Careful, they get 16 feet long and eat feeder puppies.LOL

planetcatfish.com says 39" for A.adonis which is the biggest I can find.
I would hope they would be aware of a larger plec. For now I am chalking up the "5 foot pleco" as a measurement error.

planetcatfish doesn't know everything. =/
i don't appreciate people calling me a liar.
even if it wasn't quite five feet, i know it was close.

Not saying you are a liar, but judging length just by eyesight is not very accurate. For all I know you may be correct but I'm going to stick with the info given from a very reputable website. I guess that's just how my mind works.
