I'm thinking of getting my gf a digital camera for her birthday (which is next weekend)..

I'd appreciate some advice on a good camera that's simple enough to use and takes nice pictures. Nothing too specific (we're not photographers) but something that has a good auto setting type thing.

I would like to get her a slim model.

From doing a little research, it seems like Canon and Lumix are getting great reviews. Do any of you have any advice you can share?

Thanks!

i have a Lumix and its great. I have one of the cheaper ones, DMC-LZ5 and it takes good pics using just the basic settings on it. With any camera, go ahead and find a cheap tripod for it, makes for much better pics if your taking pics of something thats not moving much. I got my 5 foot tripid from radio shack for $15.

nikon has good cameras from what i hear.

I have a DMC-LZ5 as well, and have found it to be a great all-around point-and-shoot camera. No manual settings for shuttter speed or focus, but I can live w/out them considering the price of a Canon (just to take better pics of my fish...).
