You could teach them to talk and say things like " No Smoking!" or "Fire! Fire!" ;)
How's that non-smoking going for ya anyway?

cam191919

might need to teach it that, smoke would probably kill the lil guy, guacamole too

I knew of a parrot whose owner taught him to talk. You know how customers like to go up to parrots and go "Can you talk"? Well, the parrot would then say "Yeah, can you fly?" It was awesome.

I went to a party when I was a teen (years of sundays ago) and was in a house with a bunch of people . I heard what sounded like an old man using every curse phrase in the book. I couldn't figure out who it was until I spotted the Mina Bird , funniest thing I ever did hear/see :)
Nothing like a talking bird :)

i would love to have a talking bird of sorts, but i'd be tempted to teach it every dirty word in the book and that isn't the greatest idea with a kidlett in the house too.......lol.

Coler, teach it to say "central filtration is bad" and then take it to a big box lfs. hahahaha!

I adopted a nanday conure from my sister after she had a baby and couldn't handle the baby and the bird screaming at eachother...of course, before then she taught her all kinds of things, I'd walk in the room and she'd tell me to "F-off", or do the Nelson laugh if I dropped anything, and when she'd bite my fingers she'd follow up with "Ouch!" before I'd get a chance to say it. She also LOVED the BeeGees...she'd dance to "Staying Alive" everytime and squawk along to the "ah-ah-ah-ah stayin alive" part. Fun birds, but they need a lot of interaction and I worked alot, so I eventually found her a home with a lady on disability with other birds. Sometimes I miss having a bird, but then I remember the mess around the cage and think about how my other pets would react (by eating it), so I'm ok living vicariously through other bird owners :D.

We have an Umbrella Coc katoo, Maxi, we got her as a hand reared chick from a family friend who hatched her out. She is the coolest bird, she doesn't talk very much, says hello, and a few other words I can't say here, drinks beer from a can and walks with a pimp limp when excited. She is a gigantic love sponge and will cuddle up under your neck and sleep. I highly recommend a parrot to anyone who can handle the mess. They are messy creatures, she splashes water everytime the vacuum is run, but are the greatest to have for their antics alone. I say get it!

I raise birds and they make wonderful pets, however, parrots are noisy, messy and they require a lot of one on one attention from you to be properly socialized. If you live in an apartment, you need to consider your neighbors tolerance for a lot of loud screeching. Conures can be especially loud. If you are looking for a new family member and you don't mind the mess and noise, then a parrot might be the perfect pet for you, if you are looking for a pet that only requires feeding and having its cage cleaned, then you don't want a baby parrot. I would definitely advise only buying one bird.

my parrot was hand raised, but no one bought her right away so she was housed near other birds, like macaws and a very loud sulfur cockatoo, so she know all of the most annoying sounds :hypnotized:

Buyer Beware. Parrots are not easy and can alter your behavior.

I always wanted a pet crow or raven. There was a crow nest in a pine tree next to my house when I was a kid and I was soooo tempted to capture a baby and raise it.

my cockatiel is awesome. she doesnt talk, but she's my buddy.

be careful that your Sengal does not turn into a one-person bird though. otherwise, it will get jealous if it sees you with other people all of the time- this includes spouses and children. keep it well socialized and it shouldnt be a problem.

oh, and birds hating vaccums is common. my cockatiel hates our too.

i would really like to get a big bird like a cockatoo, macaw, or amazon though. they are such amazing birds and live for a very long time.

My amazons take a bath everytime I vacuum the floor too. I guess the vacuum must sound like rain or running water to them.

Don't they require nectar or fresh fruit? They are really pretty birds. You definitely have to be a bird person and have a lot of time to have a parrot and enjoy it. I can't remember the last time my house was quiet after the sun came up. LOL.

My dad had a cockatiel until my bro was born and they had to give it away because it got so jealous it used to go for his eyes. Niiice. My friend and I are in the process of teaching the African Grey in my LFS swearwords, but the snags come when a) the owners notice and b) I manage to stay away from my addiction for a couple of weeks...don't get to see him a lot then...

yeah, they are a very high maintenance bird..... I got him due to a passing relative.... the extremist of the extreme I mean. The cannot eat seeds at all because of their weak crop... so they are confined to fruits, some soft veggies, and nectar. I used to give his liquid nectar for hummingbirds weekly as a treat but no more than that. His daily diet consisted of a dish of water and a powdered form of nectar where he would dip his beak into the water and then into the powder and have a grand old time. He was a great bird but a one person bird regardless of how many people tried to be friends with him. He was never nasty, just preferred me over anyone else. His daily cleaning was pretty extensive, because of his diet, his waste was very watery, very messy, and very all over the place. I swore he aimed that vent sometimes... Eventually, I had to find him a home though because his upkeep was purely exhausting.... and as much as I wanted to keep him, I just knew he deserved better than I could provide... I found a rescue guy that took him, he had licenses up the gazoo, and many animals in his place. He had pheasants out back, lizards, turtles and herps in front, a parrot room downstairs on the main level and a smaller bird room upstairs. I asked that he keep him and not look for further placement for him and he agreed to the condition... I truly felt I was leaving him in good hands..... but man I miss that little guy...

lorikeets are soo light, i picked one up just a little smaller than my senegal and it felt like a feather

if you do get a senegal you'll be surprised at whet freaks them out, mine acts completely normal if i put a 4 foot ratsnake near it, but if im holding a hose feathers will fly. i was fixing something and i picked up a drill and she flew into the pool, i had to go swimming :shakehead:

NOT COOL :mad2:

do you intend to give this bird a home for the rest of its or possibly your life. I do not blame the owner for getting really :swear: with you and your friend. Honestly if that was my shop you would be banned.

coler parrots are a bundle of fun, but definitely they require a change in lifestyle to say the least

It's the shop owners parrot so it already has a home. I meant it as a joke and I don't see the bird often enough for this to work if I even tried it. I bet you think I'm a really juvenile kid who doesn't care about animals and you couldn't be more wrong, so I'm sorry that was the way it came out and I shouldn't have said it.

though I did get a marineland 80g bowfront tank with a built in 35g sump in trade for him

parrots, especially cockatiels and larger, are like small children. they are VERY impressionable, and will follow what they see and hear readily. whats more, unlike little kids, they dont really understand what they can and cannot say. albiet, little kids dont really know either, but it is much easier to teach a small chile what is right and what is wrong than a bird. a parrot does everything based on the attention it gets, and teaching it swearwords will get it plenty of attention, and therefore it will say them more and more.

My bros freind has an african grey named pepper, she is waay mean and Im one of the only women she will allow to give her a head skritch. she always amazes me with what she says, she loves jack johnson and sings along to most of his songs and if she smells smoke she starts beeping like a fire alarm. she also mimics voices really well, when ever she says hello she sounds just like her owner and I have to look at him just to make sure he didnt say anything.

I breed parrots, have over 150; I would advise caution before buying- you are looking at spending the next 20 plus years with a permanent three-year-old!! If you must get one, start with a ringneck parakeet. they are robust hardy birds which talk well if you spend time teaching them. ( they love aquariums, so covers are mandatory)

Jst FYI crows are a pain had one that literally dropped out the sky. Granted he was not hand raised and mature when he landed by us but we kept him until he could fly again. LOUD bird and messy, would let you hold him and perch on you with out to much biting but an extremly loud bird. He finally regained himself ad flew away after about a month. Still never knew what exactly made him fall out the sky.

coler I thought I would show you some of our birds, for sure they are messy but we converted a whole room in our house into a free flight aviary. I figure it this way for sure lifestyle changes have to be made when you chose pets over social life but hey a good trade in my books much more enriching, and a shop vac and some water in a bucket does wonders for the mess. Besides the lovliness of sharing life with god's creatures can not be compared. When I do the renovation there will be a year round greenspace behind this wall with a doorway cut through that will be as wide as our house and about 20 feet long that will attach to the garage.

Word of warning! Don't keep a Parrot in your bedroom. My Double Yellowhead learned to mimic my ex-girlfriend's voice to a tee. Including all the things she said/moaned!
