As i get slowly and slowly more bored with my freshwater tank, im looking more into bigger marine tanks. i like the nanocube idea but i despise its limited lighting. I think im going to be taking down my 20gal.fw and 10 gal and just upgrading into a bigger marine tank and only having one... fw was fun for a bit but i just dont enjoy it anymore, plus i want to go to school for marine life so i think it would be better to upgrade in the SW department. I think im going to get this..

JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Cube HQI Aquarium

http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewI...iums-Saltwater_Aquarium_Supplies~vendor~.html

it has MH already built into it and a better filtering system. I also looked into the NEO nano, but that has no lighting and would then add yet another 300 dollars to my decision.

I think ultimitly going with this 28 gallon would be the best decision i could do. its got everything included (even a stand which im sure wont be very good).

I would just need some extra sand, some more live rock and i would be set and well off on making my already coming along nanocube, bigger and better. ANyone have any experinace with the system, the only complaint ive heard is the heat output and the skimmer isnt very good.

Suggestions and comments please and thank you!

the output problem is as easy getting a chiller which is cheaper the MH

HOnestly, I've not heard that many good things about jbj. The complaints seem to focus on the quality of construction (but then again, I've read some pretty nasty reviews of the AP24 and I love mine). So who knows.

That being said, I would want an open top if I was running MH lights. I think the heat build up would be outrageous with a closed top.

The NEO tanks are killer, pricey, but killer. They have everything built in but the lights.

My comment is based on having no real knowledge of you but just from reading what you've said.

Saltwater and Freshwater are a totally different commitment. When your $2 molly dies, you just go anywhere and get another one. When it looks sick, you do a water change, put some copper in, etc. When you get bored, you only wasted a comparably small amount of money.

When you invest a good chunk of change into saltwater you better be doing it because you want a hobby, not because you want some pretty fish. I have both and when I got into SW it was with the intention to spend a lot of time with it. You can't just toss some copper in, you can't just change the water and expect that to solve it.

Consider these kinds of things:

Do you feel comfortable using tap water? If so, expect to always have it in the back of your mind when you have an algae outbreak, or fish are randomly dying. Do you need a filtration system?

Are you committed? That coral is going to take years to develop into a real 'part' of your tank. Are you comfortable waiting that long?

Do you mind cleaning? A saltwater tank of any size requires dramatically more cleaning and maintenance on an almost daily basis.

I think you get my point, there are so many more things to consider when you really get serious about SW make absolutely certain you are going to stick with it. If so, good luck to you and I hope it is as rewarding for you as it has been for me.

As for your specific questions it looks like a nice setup, I don't have an experience with that equipment myself. I do know that, for me, 28g would have been frustratingly limiting for the types of animals I wanted. What kind of stocking are you looking for?

I dont know if you know this yet lanimret, but i already have a 14gallon nano that i completely obsess over. I have multiple corals i love just the way they are, they eat my frozen foods, and they do quite well, i dont use tap water i use RO. im very intune with my tank and do everything i can for it... dedication is something ive proved on this site time and time over but i appreciate the words of caution.. my stocking options are small, i just really enjoy coral, id really only have my clown fish, my scarlets, probably a clam, and definitliy a harlequin shrimp for i have wanted one since i started!

DSR your heat concern is very much like mine a chiller would be very necessary. I would go with the neo nano, but i would then need to save up even more for a HQI light. i am getting a job at my LFS(hopefully)and maybe theyll have one they dont need! i think i really might save for the neo..itll take a while but i think itll be a good decision!

Heres some updated pictures of the 1 month old tank :)

man, I am jealous. I have so much algae in my tank right now it is frustrating (but it is getting better). The tank is looking very nice.

Jealous! no way man your tank is fantastic, im shocked my diatoms havent come yet! its sort of worrying me!

I'll send ya some of my algae to give your tank that lived in look! lol. Where the heck is everyone these days. I go to memphis for a couple of days and everyone just vanishes.
