View Full Version : Hospital/Quarantine Tank
How do you best manage your hospital/quarantine tank? Do you keep them empty, then fill them when there are new arrivals or illnesses?

If you are pressed for room a good way to do it is to put it in storage but keep the filter for it in with your main tank. Then when you need to set up your quarantine/hospital tank you can just move that filter back on it and it will already have cycled bacteria in it.

I keep mine running with filter on them...
...of course I do have some empty tanks in the attic for 'just in case' reasons but I doubt they'll stay empty for long!

You can either keep an extra little filter on one of y our other tanks, and then transfer it to the qtank when needed, or keep a filter running in the qtank and feed the cycle with ammonia.
I'd only really do either of these choices because the last thing a sick fish wants is an uncycled tank.

I keep a spare sponge filter running in an established tank and the q-tank is empty.

I find that if I have a tank with water in it, it starts collecting plants.
So, now I try tp break down the Q tanks and move them to storage until needed.
I rinse with water, then scrub with vinegar, finally scrub with salt. Dry. Then I open a canister filter and remove the sponge on top and squeeze it into the Q tank filter if HOB, or tank if using a sponge filter. Instantly cycled.

Just took my Q-tank down. If there's no fish in it, its empty. When there are fish in it, I'm doing daily 50% water changes so there isn't much chance of a build up of ammonia/nitrite. I have kept the sponge from the hob filter in another tank if I think the fish may be in the q-tank for an extended period of time.
