View Full Version : My CRS Tank
When I decided to get another aquarium setup instead of going with a marine tank as I did before, I thought I would give freshwater a try.
So as I was making a wish list of things I wanted to put in my 55 gallon 2 of them were Crystal Red and Black and White shrimp. A few days ago someone posted some CRS for sale and they were also offering the black and white.
So I ordered them, after I received them they were just as bright and colorful as I had hoped. One draw back was that I didn't do enough research first before making a purchase (I have now learned to read first), the parameters that they need aren't the same as what the other occupants of my large tank need. So a quick trip to WalMart to purchase a tank setup was necessary, I got it home, got some plants from my daughter Kyryah, and this is what I wound up with...

One thing I don't understand though is that both of the shrimp that were black and white when I received them have now changed their color..in this picture one is partially black/red and white. They are now both all red and white? Anyone have a clue??

Wow, they are cute!! :D
If this is a new tank setup, most likely bacteria system hasn't been established. Are you using filter that has been running for a while? Otherwise, check ammonia, no2, no3 regularly. More plants will be helpful for shrimps to have food sources, hiding places, and obsorb netrigon elements as well.

It is a new set up using media from my established filters and is monitored daily.

Yes it is new, but I am checking daily and watching it very closely. I am using media from Kyryah's tank, adjusted my pH with RO water, and used all of the plants that I could lay my hands on at such short notice. I want them to live, breed, and live happy little lives. :)

Kali,
I see that there's a lot of rocks in that tank, not sure if you are aware, but CRS enjoys a lower GH and possibly a lower TDS range than most other shrimps, such as RCS. Do you know the GH of that tank's water, and will the rock's eventually leach into the water? Adjusting the PH is fine, but what you really need to watch out for is the GH when it comes to breeding these shrimp. You're on the right track with the RO Water, just wanted to give you a heads up about GH and TDS.

What is GH?

Kali, be careful with those rocks. They look nice, but may not be suitable to crs tank... If they raise PH, please take them out. CRS lives in lower PH environment, 6.2-6.8.

General Hardness (GH)
This is essentially a measurement of Magnesium and Calcium ions in the water.

pH is 6.8, after three days has not risen. We have not tested for GH but will pick up a kit and do that soon.

At this time I have the capability to check the GH and it is currently at 75 ppm, which is soft. I did do some reading and know that this is also something that I have to watch. Yes, I know that I am going to have to keep an eye on the rocks and if it becomes an issue remove them. Oh, the pH was 6.8. Thanks for your information!! :)

Hey I would suggest ADA Soil 1...will greatly help....using reg. gravel rocks even though you use RO water...the gravel will still cause the ph to slowly rise...thus causing an instability of the ph and you're shrimps will be stressed...I went through the same situation and eventually converted all my CRS tanks w/ ADA...good luck!

Oh yeah forgot to mention...NICE tank!
That is actually a very course sand..(one I will NEVER use again, it is horrible), but my pH is very stable..(knock on wood). I have been watching the pH almost daily and have had no changes whatsoever. No jinxing allowed!!

Last week I took it in my head to move my CRS tank from one room to another.
As you all know this is what my tank looked like when first set up on June 20th.
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn166/kali4994/10%20Gallon%20Shrimp%20Tank/HPIM1491.jpg (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn166/kali4994/10%20Gallon%20Shrimp%20Tank/HPIM1491.jpg%5B/IMG%5D)
Then on July 3rd, it looked like this.
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn166/kali4994/10%20Gallon%20Shrimp%20Tank/HPIM1902.jpg (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn166/kali4994/10%20Gallon%20Shrimp%20Tank/HPIM1902.jpg%5B/IMG%5D)
A July 18th a day or two after the move.

And today this is what it looks like. Growth spurt!

Sorry to keep questioning...but what kind of lighting do you have? I love the shrimp by the way they are great, wish I would have known of them before I started my invert tank, even though I love my RCS and they are breeding so well.

I am using 2 of the "WalMart special" Lights of America Mini Aquarium Bulbs that they have in their fish department. It is a 10 watt Fluorescent bulb. It says Color enhancing 40% more light on it. They cost $5 something here. So it is nothing special either. These are incandescent bulbs.

So they are not the CFL lights? On one of my 10 gallon tanks I have the type that will take incandesent lights and I was thinking of changing out to the CFL bulbs that are $5 something. I recently got this riccia and it won't grow without medium or high light. Might just have to trade it soon. It doesn't die....it just doesn't grow.

Yes, that is the CFL bulb that I was going to buy at Walmart. Right now I have the two incadesent bulbs in there. Can anyone tell me if that would be any better for me? Or is Kali's tank proof that it would be better? lol
feiyang
07-29-2009, 12:25 AM
CFL is much better than regular incadesent bulb. 99% of the power consumed by incadesent bulbs are transformed to heat, the leftover is light. You also need to consider the kelvin number, e.g., 6700K is the right kelvin for plant.

Kali -- Thank you for sharing your pictorial journey with us! :) I love seeing the before and after pictures and yours are absolutely phenomenal! I can't wait to hear news of your successful breedings and your lush "garden" is beautiful.
Here is an update...
I got a good deal on a complete 29 gallon set up on Craig's List. I switched the CRS over from the 10 gallon that I had on August 8th.
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn166/kali4994/10%20Gallon%20Shrimp%20Tank/HPIM2171.jpg
So once again my plants look a little sparse.

But I am still have the great growing rate that I was on the 10 gallon so it is filling in nicely and quickly.
