Another algae question

I have a major algae problem.. I think. The glass in portions of the tank are so covered with a dark substance, you can hardly see into the tank. I am assuming this is algae.

We did not have a problem until about 6 weeks ago. It's a 70 gallon tank and was set up last December. All seemed OK. Now that summer has arrived, part of the tank is in direct sunlight for most of the day. It has not affected the water temperature, but has increased what we think is the algae.

Now our nitrates have gone high along with the ph.

Is this stuff algae?

If it is, what are our options short of moving the tank? we have no were else to set it up.

Could this excessive algae (if it is algae) be causing our high nitrate and ph problems?

BTW, I forgot to mention that my water appears clear. The stuff is on the glass and the fake plants but has not affected the water color.

Thanks

It sounds like algae, but a picture would help a lot. It seems to me that if the tank is in direct sunlight, that could be a major contributor to the problem. If your nitrates are also high, it sounds like this combination is a winner for algae growth.

I don't think the algae would cause high nitrates as it actually feeds off the nitrates in the tank. I think it would lower nitrates if it had much of an effect at all. I can't speak for ph, but my guess is the algae is not the cause here either. Have you changed anything in the tank lately (ie... stocking, plants, maintenance schedule)?

As far as options, I think increasing water changes and covering the window (to the extent possible) would be a good place to start.
